Using heat on stuck car Bolts

Using heat on seized up car bolts, the DIY solution.


If all else fails to move a nut, bolt or screw, heating it up may help to release it. You can do this with direct heat, from a blowtorch, for example, or indirect heat from boiling water. Only a gentle warming is needed so if using a blowtorch do not play a hot flame on the nut or bolt for too long.  

Remember, also, if heating something below the car that heat may pass through the floor and set fire to carpets or damage wiring on the other side. 

Remove anything flammable, therefore, before you start. Also ensure that naked flames are kept well away from fuel tank and carburettor and any rubber, plastic or wiring insulation and fuel or brake lines
If this is difficult, make up a heat shield from a tin can and place it between the flame and fastening (fig 1).

Boiling water can be poured directly over a fastening if it is accessible from above, but make sure none enters electrical components. If you want to heat up bolt heads or nuts accessible only from below, hold a container of boiling water close to them so they remain immersed for a minute or two (fig 2).
After you have heated the fastenings, spray them with releasing fluid and they should come undone more easily.

Do not worry if the releasing fluid just turns to steam when it hits the bolt or stud some of it will reach the threads.
