Much the same as Caterham's other models in the chassis and body with front engine and rear wheel drive, the Super 7 BDR differed in that it used a Cosworth engine. In 1983, the BD series saw its second road engine incarnation (the first being the original BDA and BDB), the BDR, which was a BDA or BDB sold in kit form for the Caterham Super Seven in 1601 cc (120 bhp) and in 1701 cc (130 bhp) formats.
The first Cosworth BDRs appeared around 1983, in 1600 cc 140 bhp (104 kW) form, Successor of the Lotus Seven the Caterham Super Seven having certain differences to the Ford engine and plastic body. By 1986 new quality version with 1700cc Ford Cosworth engine with four valves per cylinder built in the new factory the 1700 cc 150 bhp (112 kW) version was later replaced by 1990 when the top of the range engine had become the 2 litre Vauxhall HPC, as fitted to the Vauxhall Calibra, putting out 165—175 bhp. Cosworth BDRs were still options for kits until the late 1990s.
