From 1967, the BMW 1600 GT was continued to be built by BMW from The Glas 1300 GT Coupé until 1968 with a hardly changed coupé body, a new rear axle and an engine manufactured in-house.
History
With the takeover by BMW, the GT model was equipped with BMW technology from September 1967. The engine known from the BMW 1600 TI with 77 kW (105 hp) and the semi-trailing arm rear axle with coil springs instead of the original rigid axle with leaf springs were used. The body of the Glas GT was extended Small car with shapely lines—styling by Frua. Narrow radiator air-intake with tiny, central intakes and deeply inset horizontally barred grille. Large headlamps flank intake and are thrust-forward. Sloping bonnet features small, slot intake; deep, curved windscreen is well-raked and roof line is rounded. Large rear window and squared-off tail- panel with circular tail-lamps. Perforated disc wheels with large hub-caps. with an adapted radiator grille (BMW kidney) and the rear lights (round, from the 02 series) were changed by BMW. However, only the coupé continued to be built with this technology until August 1968.

At the suggestion of Max Hoffman, development of a convertible version of the BMW 1600 GT began in 1967. Frua worked on two prototypes, which were not further developed to mass production. The only surviving prototype of the 1600 GT Cabriolet was restored by trainees at the BMW Dingolfing plant in 2018 and is now in the BMW Group Classic collection.
