The Citroën ID is an automobile built by Citroën , a simplified version of the Citroën DS from 1957 to 1975.
History
When it was released in May 1957 , the Citroën ID 19 Luxe was powered by a “ D series engine ” 1 911 cm 3 66 hp with a single- barrel carburetor (double- barrel on the DS ). It is an evolution of the "11 D" engine of the Traction Avant 11 hp, equipped with a hemispherical cylinder head. It shares hydraulic suspension with the DS , but stands out with the classic clutch gearbox, unassisted steering and braking.
The IDs, with a less luxurious finish than the DS , can be recognized by the absence of wheel covers, the body-colored and non-chromed headlight covers (small wheel covers and chrome headlight towers from the 1959 models), to the black rubber around their windshield surround (gray seal cover on DS), to their burgundy then black plastic rear indicator horns (chrome on DS) and to the silver chevrons affixed to the rear trunk (gold on DS). The roof of the IDs is in unpainted translucent fiberglass (eggshell color); it is painted white from the 1962 models.

The ID 19 convertible, launched in July 1961, has a presentation identical to that of the DS convertible except for the dashboard of the sedan and the absence of “ashtray” grilles above each front wing. FromFebruary 1962, after around thirty copies produced, it inherited the engine of the DS 19 then it was discontinued during 1965 .

In total, for the D series, 741,747 sedans and 93,919 station wagon derivatives were produced. When it was launched, during the 1957 vintage, the ID 19 was offered in three trim levels:
ID 19 Luxe version (sedan, station wagon, wagon, commercial):Chronologically, this is the first version marketed in May 1957.Hemispherical cylinder head, 66 hp SAE ( 135 km / h ). Compared to the DS 19: front seats with fixed backrests, no rear central armrest, small armrests added only on the rear doors from 1959 models, specific interior fabric and washable seat linings on station wagons and derivatives, floor mats rubber at the front, no watch, no interior headliner (until 1962 models), trunk without upholstery.
version ID 19 Normal:Marketed a few weeks later, only as a sedan, it is an even more basic version.Cylinder head type Traction Avant , 63 hp SAE ( 130 km / h ), center legs and roof belts painted black, spare wheel in the boot, not attached (fixed under the bonnet for the other versions) Citroën plate on the bumper rear shocks (no rafters on the trunk) , black color only, fixed rear windows, no door seals, front bench seat instead of the seats, only one sun visor ... This version with Spartan equipment has had confidential distribution, it was withdrawn from the catalog in 1961.
ID 19 Comfort version (saloon, station wagon, family, commercial):Marketed in the summer of 1957, it is the high-end ID, the one that was most widely distributed, made from the Luxe model.Three door armrests integrated in the side panels (no armrest on the driver's door), reclining front seats, watch, vanity mirror, rear central armrest (on saloon and station wagon), heating supply to the left rear door . The ambulance was delivered automatically in Comfort finish. During the long career of the ID, the equipment has steadily improved.
Developments
- 1962 models :
- Assisted braking.
- 1963 models :
- New streamlined front, synchronized 4-speed gearbox and optional power steering. FromMarch 1963, the breaks and derivatives have the right to the engine of the DS 19 (83 ch SAE), then, they will follow the evolutions of the engines type DS (except injection).
- 1965 models :
- 70 hp DIN engine (75 hp SAE) and new dashboard.
- 1966 models :
- 74hp DIN (81hp SAE) engine, 5-bolt wheels, with larger hubcaps.
- 1967 models :
- Engine 5 stages 1,985 cm 3 78 hp DIN (ID 19 B). Change from red liquid to green liquid (LHM) for hydraulic components. If the suspension is less flexible, the green liquid is much less corrosive than the old LHS. The LHM fluid will be taken over by subsequent Citroëns with hydropneumatic suspension.
- 1968 models :
- New front end with 4 projectors including 2 optional rotating and optional hydraulic gearbox on station wagons and derivatives until 1970.
- 1969 models :
- The power of the ID 19 B increases to 81.5 DIN hp. Engine 1 985 cm 3 91 hp DIN on the new ID 20 with finish and equipment close to Comfort (recognizable by its chrome turn signal horns).
- 1970 models :
- New dashboard with round dials, the ID trade name disappears in favor of the DSpécial (entry level replacing the ID 19 Luxe) and DSuper (replacing the ID 20) designations.
- 1972 models :
- 89 hp DIN engine on DSpecial and 99 DIN hp on DSuper. The exterior door handles are recessed.
- 1973 models :
- New power increase on the DSpecial which adopts the 99 hp DIN engine from the DSuper. Power steering is standard on the DSuper. Appearance of the DSuper 5, it is a DSuper with a 5-speed gearbox, but with a DS 21 engine (2175 cm 3 , 106 hp DIN). Thanks to their power steering, now in series, the station wagon and derivatives take the name DS .
Following the launch of the Citroën CX 2000, the D series was discontinued in the summer of 1975.
