The Laguna II was launched in 2001 and restyled in 2005. If its predecessor (the Laguna I) was known for its reliability, it has experienced many damages that have tarnished its reputation even if the restyling of 2005 will improve things for that level there. Its release has indeed been marred by numerous electronic problems, including the "hands-free" card to replace the ignition key, which has damaged its reputation. Mechanically, the 1.9 dCi 110 and 120  hp and 2.2 dCi have experienced many cases of turbo , gearbox, connecting rods and sometimes motor (2001, 2002), problems of ball joints suspensions, steering and axial ball joints,, shock absorber springs that break. This model had already a rate of counter- visits very high, from the first technical inspection (at 4 years). Its annual production, still in Sandouville, went from 210,000 units in 2002 to 144,500 in 2004 and 82,700 in 2006.

This car is characterized by a good comfort, an excellent road behavior but especially by its excellent level of passive safety because it is the first car in the world to get five stars in the EuroNCAP crash test . In addition, the ESP is standard on all models, even those entry-level, which was not the case of the competition. It has been equipped with many petrol and diesel engines with all four cylinders in line, with the exception of the 3-liter gasoline engine.
