The Toyota Highlander is a Toyota SUV . It was introduced in 2000 at the New York International Auto Show and has been sold since 2000/2001 in Japan, the USA and Australia. In Australia, it is offered under the name Toyota Kluger , since there the Hyundai Terracan runs under the name Highlander.

The Highlander is based on the Toyota Camry . It is offered as a 2WD (with a powered front axle ) or as a 4WD ( four-wheel drive ). Four-wheel drive is standard in the hybrid model. A four-speed automatic comes in four-cylinder, a five-speed automatic in six-cylinder application. The hybrid drive uses an electronically controlled variable power transmission (ECVT) due to the drive technology.

Engines

In addition to the well-known 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and the 3.3-liter V6 engine, which are also used in other models of Toyota and Lexus , the Highlander is also available in a hybrid version (petrol engine 3.3-l 155 kW / 208 hp V6 electric engine front 123 kW / 167 hp, rear electric motor 50 kW / 68 hp) offered. With the Toyota Highlander this engine was used for the first time in an SUV. In almost identical form, this drive is also used in the Lexus RX 400h.

In the hybrid version of the Highlander reaches an electronically limited maximum speed of 180 km / h. The acceleration of 0-60 mph (0-96 km / h) is given as 7.4 s. No values are given for the gasoline engine variants. The consumption of the six-cylinder models is 12.4 l in city traffic and 9.4 l on the highway. The hybrid drive should reach 7.4 l (city) and 8.7 l (highway). However, it should be noted that American consumption tracking practices differ from European ones and produce higher consumption figures through more realistic test scenarios.

Equipment

The standard safety features include stability control, front and side airbags and side impact protection. A typical on the American market tuned extensive interior (including cruise control, climate) is already included in the basic price, but still numerous equipment packages (leather, navigation system, etc.) are offered. At an additional cost, a third row of seats from the  seven-seater.

In the US, the Highlander costs between about $ 24,800 for the 2.4-l 2WD and $ 36,600 for the 4WD Hybrid Limited with third-row seats.
