The production of the model began in June 1991 in the Japanese Toyota plant in Toyota City, where the model until May 1995 rolled off the assembly line, until it was replaced by the new E11 generation the E10 generation of the Toyota Corolla was introduced in May 1992 as the successor to the Corolla E9 and offered until April 1997. In Turkey, the E10 generation was produced at Toyota as until in August 1998. In North America, the Corolla was new for the 1993 adding a driver-side air bag and available anti-lock brakes (ABS). It came as a 4-door sedan in Standard, DX, and LE trim, and as a 5-door DX wagon. Wheelbase grows 1.3 inches to 97; the sedan's body is longer by two inches.

Although a completely new platform was developed, not much had changed technically. The chassis was equipped with MacPherson struts and wishbones. As body styles there was a three- and five-door combined sedan called Compact, a four-door notchback, a station wagon and the long five-door hatchback version called "Lift back". The station wagon of this series still characterizes the Afghan street scene The driving position is very good, and the pedals are impeccably arranged. The controls are smooth and accessible. The radio is indeed placed high on the dashboard and offers a surprisingly good sound for its category. The dashboard, finally, is clear and very readable, but the instruments are too dimly lit at night.

The engine range now included only three engines. The gasoline engines had a 1.4-liter (4E-FE, 1332 cc) with initially 65 kW (88 hp), a 1.6-liter (4A-FE) with 84 kW (114 hp) and a newly developed 2, 0-liter diesel with 53 kW (72 hp). All engines were equipped with 5-speed gearbox the transmission ratios are very well spaced for the engine's torque and power curve. For the 1.4-liter gasoline engine 4E-FE there was an optional 3-speed automatic transmission, for the 1.6-liter gasoline engine 4A-FE an electronically controlled 4-speed automatic with overdrive. There were three trim levels: XLi, GLi (only Lift back 1.6l) and Si (only three-door 1.6l). Optionally, there was a driver's airbag with percussion and an electric sunroof.

In May 1995, the Corolla E10 was subjected to a small facelift. Minor adjustments have been made to the bumper and grille. The body variant "Lift back" accounted for. The 1.4-l-4E-FE engine now made only 75 hp (55 kW), but met the emission class Euro 2. From now on, driver and passenger airbags were standard, which were activated by electronic sensor ignition.
