In May 1987, the Corolla E9 debuted as a three- and five-door Compact, four-door notchback, five-door hatchback liftback and five-door station wagon.

The new Corollas had previously exhibited a rather lazy character, especially in the automatic version. This version's pickup and acceleration are now more lively and responsive. It must be said, however, that they were poor before. In terms of suspension and handling, the Corolla sedan obviously still stands out for its suppleness and comfort. However, that the transmission ratios are very well matched to the engine's torque and power curve.

The driving position is very good, and the pedals are impeccably arranged. The controls are smooth and accessible, and it's particularly pleasant to be able to adjust the volume or tune to another station without having to dig around at the bottom of the console. The dashboard is clear and very readable, but the instruments are too dimly lit at night.

Corolla Tercel 4WD

The all-wheel drive wagon was sold from 1988 to 1994  In some markets, the second generation of the four-wheel drive station wagon Toyota Sprinter Carib was offered under the name Corolla Tercel 4WD. In North America, it was called Corolla AllTrac.
