In May 1983, the Corolla E8 appeared with front-wheel drive and multi-link rear suspension as a four-door notchback and five-door hatchback. In October of the year followed the shorter, three- and five-door hatchback variants, which were called in Europe Corolla Compact. In the domestic market, the engine power ranged from 1.3 to 1.6 litres (60-95 kW / 81-130 hp).

In Germany, the E8 was offered as a sedan, compact and lift back. In the E8 Toyota offered at that time completely newly developed engines, which at the time were considered very economical. The entry-level engine was a 1.3-liter gasoline engine with 51 kW (69 hp) (2A), which was further developed with the facelift from 1985/86 and now 55 kW (75 hp) (2E m U-Kat) made. Alternatively, there was also a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 62 kW (84 hp) (4A) and a 1.8-liter diesel with 47 kW (64 hp) (1C) to choose from, the latter came only with the facelift,

Model maintenance

In August 1985, the Corolla as a lift back and sedan were minimally modified by a facelift.

In the course of the facelift, the floor lights were pulled further into the mudguard and the radiator grille was modified. At the tailgate, the "Corolla" trim strip was now manufactured as a continuous reflective strip. Also, the license plate light above the plate was hidden (previously side) installed. The dashboard has now been extended with a storage compartment under the ashtray and the speedometer cover and some controls (rear window wiper, rear window heating, etc.) have been changed. Engine technology, the Corolla got the new 12 valve (1.3l 75PS (2E)) with U-KAT and a diesel (1.8l 64PS (1C)), the large 1.6l petrol engine was now available with G-KAT.

The last E8 ran in March 1987 by the band, as is well known in this country but until September 1987 copies registered as a new car.

In the US, the Chevrolet Nova from 1985, a sister model of the Corolla E8 on the market.

Coupés (AE85 / AE86)

Toyota Corolla 5th generation (E8)

Based on the previous models Toyota offered from the summer of 1983 again sporty Corolla models with rear-wheel drive. In Japan, these slant and notch coupes ran under the names Corolla Levin and Sprinter Trueno, in the US were called the cars Corolla GT-S or SR5.

In the home market was a OHC 1.5-liter with 62.5 kW (85 hp) and a 1.6-liter with two overhead camshafts and 95.5 kW (130 hp) for election. In North America, these engines produced 55 kW (75 hp) and 85 kW (115 hp).

In Europe, depending on the market, both or just one body variant was offered. 1983 under the name Corolla GT the notchback version with the 1.6-liter four-valve engine, which made 91 kW (124 hp) and from the end of 1985 with catalyst 85 kW (115 hp).
