The first generation of the Toyota Corolla was built from 1966 to 1970 as the model E10.
History
In May 1966 Toyota presented as an additional model between the Toyota 800 (the predecessor of the Toyota Starlet) and the Toyota Corona, the Corolla initially as a two-door sedan. In August 1967 followed the four-door sedan and the three-door station wagon, in August 1968, a hatchback coupe under the name Corolla Sprinter. From the beginning of 1969 came the Corolla SL more powerful variants of the two-door.
The Toyota Corolla is available with three bodies: 2-door and 4-door sedan, 2-door station wagon and coupé, called the "Sprinter”. The trim levels for the sedan are Base, Hi-Deluxe and SL. The twin carburettor engine equips both the SL and the Sprinter, also available with the less powerful engine.
The construction of the Corolla consisted of a rigid axle at leaf springs rear, a front strut axle, rear-wheel drive and a short-stroke series four-cylinder engine. The original idea of Toyota is to mount a 1.0 engine with an effective displacement of less than 1000 cc on the first of the Toyota Corolla series to make it fall into a category of cars that enjoys lowered tax benefits. The arrival of the Nissan Sunny / Datsun 1000, however, pushes the designers to use a 1077 cc engine to beat the competition. This four -cylinder in-line engine, equipped with two valves per cylinder with rod and rocker control, delivers an output of 60 HP (63 in the Hi-Deluxe) in the version powered by a single carburettor (1K) and 73 HP in two carburettors (1K-B).
PERFORMANCE 1100 FUEL CONSUMPTION 36.7 m/imp gal, 30.5 m/US gal, 7.7 1 x 100 km
MAX SPEED 87 mph, 140 km/h .max speeds: 25 mph, 40.2 km/h in 1st gear; 45 mph, 72.4 km/h in 2nd gear; 67 mph, 107.9 km/h 3rd gear; 87 mph, 140 km/h in 4th gear. power- weight ratio: 25.8 lb/hp, 11.7 kg/hp.acceleration: standing 1/4 mile 19.7 sec; speed in direct drive at 1,000 rpm: 15 mph, 24.1 km/h.
In August 1969 the 1.1 engine was replaced by a unit of 1166 cc, again powered by a carburettor (3K, 68hp) or two (3K-B, 77hp). with from 1077 cc 60 hp (in the higher SL) 73 SAE-PS (44/54 kW). In the fall of 1969, the capacity was increased to 1166 cc, which increased the performance to 65 (SL: 78) SAE-PS.
The Toyota Corolla is equipped with a 4- speed manual gearbox. A 2-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel or floor control is available as an option. Like many of its competitors of the same era, the Toyota Corolla is a rear- wheel drive car. The suspensions are independent at the front according to the MacPherson scheme, supported by a transverse leaf spring that passes under the engine, while at the rear we find a rigid bridge with semi-elliptical leaf springs. The brakes are front and rear drum brakes and the wheels are 12 ".

As usual, after two years the model underwent a partial restyling and in 1970 it was replaced by the new series, the Toyota Corolla E20.
As well as for the domestic market, it was also produced for export, especially for the US market (where it began marketing in 1968) and the Australian one where it was presented simultaneously to the domestic market and assembled on site in the factory near Melbourne. The Corolla export to the US, where Toyota was active since 1958, began at prices starting at $ 1668 in the summer of 1968, an Opel Kadett B cost comparatively from 1785 US dollars. In Japan, the original price was 495,000 yen.
The Toyota Corolla is the bestselling car in the world. However, these are ten model generations with some fundamental conceptual changes such as the conversion from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive. Several times, even to date independent models have been integrated into the Corolla series.
