The Renault 9 Turbo and Renault 11 Turbo are the sports version of the R9 and R11 range, by Renault from March 1984 for the R11 Turbo and July 1985 for the R9 Turbo to meet the competition of the time by the Cléon-Fonte engine grafted with a Garrett turbo.
History
The Renault 9 was launched in September 1981 and was voted " Car of the Year 1982 ", the Renault 11 is launched in April 1983. The Renault 9 / Renault 11 duo replaces the Renault 14. The Renault 9 and Renault 11 although they were sisters had two different philosophies to target two types of customers. The Renault 9 played on its classic and elegant side with more chrome (chromed chopsticks in the bumpers, door sticks, windshield seals, rear glasses seals, interior door handles and on the dashboards), the Renault 11 was playing on its younger, more original style, with a minimum of chrome.
These two cars were designed by Robert Opron also designed the phase 2 of the Citroën DS with rotating headlights. Their chassis is reused on Renault 19 , Megane I and Scénic I , and derived for Super 5 , Express , Clio I ,Clio II , Kangoo I and Twingo II . The Renault 9 and Renault 11 are the first cars to use a Renault engine in transverse position, which will give birth to JB gearboxes that will still equip the Twingo II (The Renault 14 was the first Renault with powertrain in transverse position, but with a front axle derived from the Peugeot 104 , its " X engine " was from the French Society of Mechanics common to Peugeot and Renault, engine also used on Peugeot , Talbot and Citroën ). " F engines Appeared on the Renault 9 and Renault 11
Initially, Renault was only considering a Turbo version for the Renault 11. As for the Renault 9, there were versions GTS and GTX which were offices "sports" versions. The Renault 9 GTS and GTX adopted a sporty look with a four-spoke sports steering wheel, rev counter, oil pressure gauge and level indicator, 2 horns, seats dressed in black velvet highlighted by a red stripe, at the same time. the exterior shields are highlighted with red, fog lights, alloy wheels, low tire sizes . The Renault 11 was not entitled to this style "sporty" on its versions GTS and GTX, Renault had reserved to the R11 a more radical version, the R11 Turbo.
The Renault 11 Turbo is marketed in March 1984, only in 3 doors, its mine type is C37500. It is recognizable with its wheels in light alloys and its low-waisted tires, its stripping on the sides, its front bumper with integrated spoiler and its fog lights, lava headlights . Inside, its sports steering wheel to four-spoke, shifter-shifted leather, dashboard, rev counter, oil pressure manometer and Turbo pressure gauge, even includes an 8-function on-board computer. The front bucket seats mounted on curved slides, offer an ideal support. Velvet, thick carpet, tinted windows, power windows, remote door locking via infrared remote control.
In March 1985, the Renault 11 Turbo is also sold in 5-door versions, its type is B37500, it is only marketed in France and Argentina.
In May 1985, the limited-edition Renault 11 Turbo "ZENDER" designed in partnership with German trainer Zender is marketed, this R11 Turbo receives not only a body kit, but also the adoption of a 4-bar rear train of the same type as the Super 5 GT Turbo . It is equipped with 4 Zender alloy wheels in 15 inches. His type Mines is C37500A.
For the 1986 vintage (July 1985), the R9 / R11 range undergoes a slight restyling. The Renault 9 adopts the black grille with the thin bars and chrome surround, four headlights of the Renault 11, with a new centre console finer inside to increase the legroom, the range Renault 9 also adopt the Renault 11 counters. As for the Renault 11 a modified grille with large bars, anthracite colour and no chrome entourage, and also a thinner centre console inside, the fuel gauge loses its figures. The Renault 11 Turbo is no longer available with sand-coloured interior. The R11 Turbo adopts the four-bar rear axle of the R11 Turbo "ZENDER". On the R11 Turbo, the tinted windows, the electric windows, the locking of the doors at a distance,
But this 1986 vintage marks especially the launch of the unexpected Renault 9 Turbo. His mine type is L42500. Style level, Renault puts the package, because it will be entitled to bumpers and spoiler body colour, despite its more classic line that the R11, it will have a sportier dressing that the R11 Turbo which it keeps its bumpers and its spoiler unpainted. The Renault 9 Turbo will have different "stripping" and different alloy wheels from the Renault 11 Turbo. The Renault 9 Turbo aims to give a younger image of the R9 and boost sales stifled by the R11. The R9 Turbo has the paradox of removing what made the charm and elegance of the R9, because only the grille, dashboard and interior door handles retain chromium, to a point that it is recognizable from the First look. The equipment of the R9 Turbo is similar to that of the R11 Turbo.
In September 1986 (vintage 1987), Renault 9 phase 2 and Renault 11 phase 2 are marketed. What made the charm of the R9 phase 1 disappears, almost more chrome. From now on, only the rear and the dashboard distinguish the two models. This rule will not spare the "Turbo" versions, they will take over the alloy wheels of the R9 Turbo phase 1, the bumpers are body colours on both models and now the tinted windows, the electric windows, the condemnation remote doors are new series. On the other hand, the headlight washers are no longer available. They are equipped with 4-disc brakes, their real power increases by 10 hp and the turbo is cooled by water.
Technical
The " Cléon-Fonte engine " with side camshaft , a rustic and proven 4 cylinders since the 1960s, designed by engineer René Vuaillat appeared on the Renault Florida S and on the Renault 8 . He became famous in Rally with the Renault 8 Gordini but worn in the Renault 9 Turbo and Renault 11 Turbo with a displacement of 1,397 cm 3 (type C1J) thanks to a long stroke crankshaft. This engine receives a turbo and a full electronic ignition, which allows it to develop 105 horses at 5,750 rpm for phase 1 and 115 hp at the same regime for phase 2. The distribution is carried out by a chain.
The turbocharger is an air-cooled Garett T2 for phase 1 and water for phase 2, blowing at 0.7 bar of origin. It is placed upstream of the Solex 32 DIS carburettor . The ignition is an integral electronic ignition (AEI), characterized by the absence of mechanical break contact-switch primary current, this function being performed electronically by a computer. The AEI provides the anti-knock function (by ignition timing modulation strategy). Detection of knock is achieved by a piezo sensor located on the middle of the cylinder head. The compressed air circuit downstream of the turbocharger comprises an air-to-air heat exchanger and a safety pressure switch in order to limit the rise in pressure in this circuit (calibrated with bar).
In order to facilitate warm start and protection, an electrical anti-splash is added on the phase 2 models.

Special Series
- The Renault 11 Turbo "ZENDER" is a 11 Turbo 3-door modified by the German preparer Zender. The differences with a standard Renault 11 Turbo 3-door are as follows: spoiler attached to the front bumper, all being painted in the tint of the bodywork, red striped on the front and rear bumper fascia, red lining of sills extending that of the shields, red belt-belt lining incorporating the initials "Zender" at the rear, side-mounted elements painted to the tint of the bodywork (profiled sills, door strips), rear bumper with painted skirt to body colour, enlarged aerodynamic spoiler, black colour on tailgate window, and light alloy wheels "Zender" style 6J 15, 195/50 VR 15 tires Dunlop SP Sport Super D4 (spare wheel: steel rim + tire 155x13 ).
- The Renault 11 Turbo "FERRY" is a supercharged version of the standard 11 Turbo with increased turbo pressure and some small improvements well studied. Sold at a reasonable price, the 11 Ferry can reach speeds of 200 km / h . Regarding the dynamic aspect, the suspensions remain entirely original while at the brakes, the front pads are a little harder and the rear linings remain unchanged. A high temperature brake fluid replaces the standard one. Externally, this Renault 11 Ferry is equipped with Rial rims 15 inches in diameter with Yokohama tires in 195/60. The wheel wells are so well filled to the point that some small modifications are necessary so that everything can pass unhindered into the box. This option gives the 11 Turbo a completely different look and the whole is much more aggressive than the standard assembly.
Injection versions
Renault 9 GTE and Renault 11 GTE
In Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands and Austria, from the 1987 vintage (phase 2), the Renault 11 Turbo will be replaced by the Renault 11 GTE. The Renault 9 GTE will also be marketed. They will be led by the " engines F " of 1721 cm 3 F3N multipoint injection, they are equipped with a catalytic converter.
Renault Alliance GTA
The Renault Alliance is the version for the North American market of the Renault 9 . Beginning in 1986, the sports Renault Alliance GTA arrives with a " motor F " of 1965 cm 3 F3R (multipoint injection). Considered as a model in its own right, it is in fact only an Alliance driven by a sportier engine. It has a specific look, reminiscent of the Renault 11 Turbo "ZENDER" marketed in Europe, and a transmission and suspensions modified. It is available only in bodywork 2 doors and convertible. Just over 3500 GTAs were produced in 1987 at the AMC factory in Kenosha.
