The Opel Omega A is a luxury car from Opel, which was built between 1986 and 1993.
History
In the tradition of the previous model Commodore C, the Omega was also sold with larger six-cylinder series engine option.
The car which was initially only available as a notchback, had a newly designed chassis with rear semi-trailing arm and disc brakes on all four wheels. Like its predecessor record, the Omega was also available as an Opel station wagon "Caravan". The body has a low C w value of 0.28, which together with the relatively low weight results in very good performance with low fuel consumption.
Initially, there were engines with 1.8 and 2.0 l displacement with 60 kW (82, 90 and 115 hp) without catalyst and the already used Kadet GSi 2.0 l with 85 kW (115 hp, with catalyst) or 90 kW (122 hp, without catalytic converter). There were also still the record 2.3 litre diesel or turbo diesel engines with 74 and 100 hp. From September 1988 to October 1992, there was a 2.4-liter injection engine with 92 kW (125 hp).
In August 1987, the Omega moved in a sporty variant as "Omega 3000" with six-cylinder engine in the model range. First, used from the Senator A 3.0 l gasoline engine with 115 kW (156 hp with catalyst) or 130 kW (177 hp without catalyst) were available. From spring 1988 then was a modernized three-litre with 130 kW (177 hp with catalyst) available. From this time, the 3.0 l with power of 115 kW (156 hp).
In July 1990, a new Facelift the Omega A was visually and technically redesigned. The external characteristics of this facelift with more chrome bumper and protective strips and the dark tinted taillights. At the same time, a 110 kW (150 hp) 2.6 l six-cylinder (C26NE) was used for both the sedan and the estate. Also new was the 3.0 l 24V engine with up to 150 kW (204 hp). This engine had two overhead camshafts and an intake manifold (DUAL-RAM) and offered very good performance with relatively low fuel consumption. As an estate, the strongest variant was initially called simply 3.0i. With the facelift and the caravan estate versions, the strong 3.0 l-24V engine was installed, henceforth was called the most powerful station wagon variant, "Omega Caravan 24V”. In the last year of production of the Omega A, even the most powerful variant of the notchback sedan was called Omega 24V only. It gave way to the "3000".
In the summer of 1990, a particularly strong version of the series was introduced: the Omega Evolution 500 3.0 24V. This was a racing machine that was homologated for road approval. The engine (169 kW / 230 HP) was created by the tuner Irmscher by modification of the 3,0 l 24V. It was produced for only one year, from September 1990 to August 1991, and produced in only 500 copies.
In 1988, Arkansas -based American bodybuilder Armbruster & Stageway built an extended version of the six-door Omega that was distributed by Earnhart & Johansen. From 1989 offered Opel regularly via the dealer network also a six-door Omega. This had eight seats and an outside length of 5.58 meters with a curb weight from 1555 kg depending on the equipment, on request, a fixed centre seat.
The production of the Omega A ended in August 1993, while the sale lasted until March 1994. In April 1994, the model was replaced with the Omega B.
The Opel Omega was also sold in Brazil. There it replaced the completely outdated Chevrolet Opala, which was still based on the Opel Rekord C, and was produced from 1992 to 1998 as Chevrolet Omega. Variants: GL, GLS and CD. The caravan was called Suprema there. As engines of the 2.0i and 3.0i were used. When the supplies of (originating from Germany) 3.0-liter six-cylinder were used up, it was replaced by an outdated, 4.1-liter six-cylinder in-line engine from Chevrolet, which had already been used in the previous model Opala. The second Brazilian omega generation was no longer produced in Brazil, but imported from Holden in 2001 (Holden Commodore).
