The first generation of Eclipse was built from early 1990 to fall 1995. It was available in the US in several trim and engine variants. The simplest versions had the 1.8-liter SOHC engine 4G37 (68 kW / 92 hp), front-wheel drive, no rear window wiper and manual power windows. It is the first product of a new U.S. factory built jointly by Chrysler and Mitsubishi, called Diamond-Star.

History

The Mitsubishi Eclipse sports coupe was co-developed by the manufacturers Mitsubishi (as "Eclipse"), Plymouth (as laser) and the Chrysler subsidiary Eagle (as Talon). For this purpose, the joint venture Diamond Star Motors was founded in 1985.

For Europe only a special version of the GS and from 1994 the GS-T was imported. This had an external oil cooler, a knock sensor, a higher compression (10.4: 1 instead of 9: 1) and more power (110 kW instead of 100 kW in the GS and 143 kW in the GS-T) than the American GS. The Eclipse was also available only in a single equipment variant: full equipment except for the sunroof and leather interior. In addition, the equipment packages Top and GT could be ordered, including a sports suspension from Eibach and Koni, a different rear apron, larger 16-inch wheels, a double pipe exhaust system and a sports steering wheel of the brand Momo included. The Targa was only built around 200 times. The Targa roof can be removed in two parts and the underbody was reinforced by two 1.5 mm steel plates, making the Targa around 60 kg heavier than the standard Eclipse. The power window control has been adjusted so that the windows lower briefly when the door is opened and start again when closed. Over time, almost all Targa roofs were leaking, so an additional gasket had to be installed.

  • GSi (16V) 2.0-liter DOHC engine 4G63 (110 kW / 150 hp) and front-wheel drive as Targa (conversion from Erich Goeckel)
  • GS (Europe) 2.0-liter DOHC engine 4G63 (110 kW / 150 hp) and front-wheel drive
  • GS-T (Europe) 2.0-liter DOHC engine 4G63T (143 kW / 195 hp) and front-wheel drive and turbocharging

The bumper on the left side of the bonnet is designed to provide enough space for the timing belt cover of the Mitsubishi 4G63 engine (the base model RS had the smaller 4G37 engine, but still the hood on the bonnet).

For Austria there was a so-called "sucker" -GSX. This combines the 150-horsepower engine from the GS with the all-wheel drive of the GSX.
