The Lancia Megagamma is a concept MPV designed by Italdesign and introduced at the 1978 Turin Motor Show.
History
The Lancia Megagamma designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign and unveiled at the Turin motor show in '78.It had a 5-door compact MPV Minivan type bodywork. Mechanically, it has the front-wheel drive layout as the Lancia Gamma , with the 2.5-liter single-shaft 4-cylinder boxer engine at the front with Bosch L-Jetronic electronic injection system.
Thanks to the raised roof by 25 cm offered greater space , also as regards the driver's seat, characterized by an advanced pedals, so as to allow a more upright and ergonomic driving position, allowing at the same time to gain more knee room.
Italdesign had already experimented with a completely similar solution with the minivan body,it had no commercial follow-up, although the two projects inspired the creation of a successful model such as Renault 's Espace a few years later.. After all, Megagamma itself has introduced various concepts used on modern minivans into the panorama of the car world, in particular, a compact, spacious, extremely versatile passenger compartment with a flat floor. becoming the birth of the MPV/minivan car.
At the time of its debut, Lancia's parent company, Fiat, viewed the concept as too advanced and it did not reach production.
