The Fiat 12 HP , also called the " Fiat 12/16 HP ", is a early car built by FIAT from 1901 to 1902 .

History

It was created by Ing. Giovanni Enrico, the Turin-based company's new technical director, who took over from Eng. Aristide Faccioli. FIAT experimented with a rear-wheel-drive system with the engine in the front with this automobile. It's a four-cylinder in-line engine, either of the biblical variety or made up of two separate twin-cylinder units. The volume of the displacement is 3770 cm3. It had a three-speed transmission.

Manufactured in 106 units, assembled in Turin at the Corso Dante facilities, it was the first Fiat exported. Upon submission, the price was ₤ 12,000. At the end of 1901 it was introduced a version equipped with a new engine with four cylinders that had the ' bore of 115 mm and a stroke of 180 mm. It had a displacement of 7475 cm³ and developed a power of 28 bhp which allowed the car to reach a maximum speed of 90 km / h .

The car also had a racing version, the Fiat 12 HP Corsa , with the same engine , but lightened by the absence of rear seats. The maximum speed was 78 km / h . This car put an end to Panhard's domination in European races. In fact, Villanova-Bologna won (302 km) at an average speed of 35.094 km / h.
