The Ferrari 1512 also called Ferrari 512 F1 is a Formula One single-seater race car from the 1960s, built by the Italian Ferrari team to participate from the 1964 to 1965 .
History
The Ferrari 1512 was used in 1964 and 1965 by the Scuderia Ferrari in Formula 1 .With the Ferrari 1512 the Scuderia returned to the twelve-cylinder engine . It was the first Formula 1 engine with this configuration and was the progenitor of the flat V12 Ferrari Tipo 001 engine .This was the Tipo 207 , a 180 ° V engine with a displacement of 1489 cc. The power was 220 hp. The car had the chassis of the Ferrari 158 and was used at the end of the 1964 season and the entire 1965 season The car's name "1512" referred to the 1.5-liter displacement and 12-cylinder engine.
Technically, the single-seater is characterized by the engine, the 2 cm higher wheelbase and a slight increase in weight compared to the 158. Aesthetically, the car body is longer and differs in the number of intake manifolds . The 1.5-liter engine as provided by the regulation of the time with 12 cylinders which had been conceived in the new 180 ° configuration to make it as compact as possible by placing the alternator, the petrol pump and the power supply at its top and to consequently lower the center of gravity of the car. The engine was one of the engines with the greatest ratio between cubature of each cylinder and total displacement; in fact each cylinder measured about 125 cm³ each.Initially made with Lucas indirect injection , it was then equipped with Bosch direct injection and with a dual ignition system thanks to the adoption of two spark plugs for each cylinder. In its final version this engine produced around 225 hp at 11 500 rpm.
John Surtees was not very enthusiastic about the 1512 and almost always preferred the 158. The best finish for the 1512 was Lorenzo Bandini's second place at the Monaco Grand Prix in 1965 .
