PSA XD Indenor engine (1963-1992)

Diesel engine (Peugeot, Ford, Talbot, Mahindra, Leyland,UAZ)

Diesel engine (Peugeot, Ford, Talbot, Mahindra, Leyland,UAZ)

The PSA XD Indenor engine is a four-stroke diesel internal combustion automobile engine from 1800 to 2500cc with in-line four cylinders, with either SOHC 8-valve or 12-valve heads, cast iron block, water-cooled, with a five-bearing crankshaft, with lateral camshaft (with rocker arms and rods rocker arms), controlled by a timing chain apart from types XD85 and XD88 (cascade pinion drive), with aluminum cylinder head , eight overhead valves, developed and produced by the Indenor company between 1963 and 1992.The XD engine has been developed in 8 variants with also a six-cylinder inline version later alongside and replaced by the XUD engine.

History

The XD engine has been widely used by Peugeot, making it a leading brand in the field of diesel cars. The engine was fitted transversally in front wheel drive vehicles, and tilted by 30°. But also in non-PSA vehicles such as Ford installed longitudinally, with rear-wheel drive. Also fitted as generators, in tractors, light trucks and some jeeps aswell as boats.

Diesel engine XD 88 engine 1,948 cc

The origins of the XD engine date back to 1959, with the launch of the Peugeot 403 Diesel: the TMD 85 (1.8 D) engine was used as the basis for the XD engine. Several cars are equipped with it, not only Peugeot but also competing brands, which shows the quality, economy and robustness of these engines. There are few differences between the TMD engine and the very first XD engine, type XD85 (where the number indicates the measurement of the bore): among them, there were developments that will increase its power to 55 hp and also the inclination of the XD85 engine at 20 °.

The XD engine has been fitted to some Ford cars in Europe such as the Granada also some Indian Mahindra off-road vehicles , some Leyland pickup trucks , and some models of the Soviet Volga . The XD2 and XD3 versions were also mounted on jeep UAZ , imported into Italy, including the model Jeep UAZ-469, imported by the firm Martorelli Rome to replace the gasoline engine 2445 cc in the original carburetor XD3 at 2,498 cc .

The PSA DW (Diesel) is a series of internal combustion engines that are mainly used in Peugeot and Citroën automobiles.

DW8

The DW8 is a swirl chamber diesel engine with a displacement of 1.9 l (1868 cc) with a bore of 82.2 mm and a stroke of 88 mm. This replaced the uncharged versions of XUD7 and XUD9 .

Production of the DW8 was discontinued in 2007 due to a lack of Euro 4 suitability. The DW8 was replaced by the 1.4-liter HDi DV engine with 50 kW (68 hp).

Peugeot Citroën PSA TUD engine

Peugeot Citroën PSA TUD engine

The PSA -TUD engines are a series of small four-cylinder in - line engines used in various Peugeot and Citroën cars. The engine was also used in the Rover Metro. Also the diesel versions of the second generation of the Nissan Micra and the Lada Samara in Europe also had this diesel  engine.

The TUD was the diesel variant. Peugeot first used the cylinder housings of the TU3 with 1360 cc (bore 75 mm, stroke 77 mm) and named it TUD3, but in 1994 the displacement was increased from 1360cc to 1527 cc with a bore of 77 mm and a stroke of 82 mm and the engine was then Renamed TUD5.

It was available with a Bosch or Lucas injection pump. It was installed in some small car models of the PSA Group (AX, Saxo, 106) and was also sold to other car manufacturers who did not have small diesel engines. Form 1993 until the end of production in 1998,

The engine badge contains the following information:

  • The fuel used, which is indicated by the first two or three letters: TU (petrol) or TUD (diesel).
  • The first number indicates the hundredth position of the cubic capacity : TUD3 thus stands for diesel engine 1 3 60 cc.

The remaining letters or numbers in the sequence give additional hints:

  • M indicates that the fuel of an electronic Monopoint - intake manifold with (single injector) is injected.
  • C shows an electronic ignition without distributor . ("Dormant" ignition system)
  • F indicates that the engine block is made of cast iron.
  • A is a change (A for "improved") of an earlier version.
  • S is a sporty variant with a higher performance than the base engine.
  • J indicates that the fuel is supplied via a multi-port electronic fuel injection system with four injectors (one per cylinder). J immediately followed by a 2 ("J2") shows two valves per cylinder (eight in total), followed by a 4 ( "D4" or "JP4" ), this indicates the presence of 16 valves (four per cylinder).
  • P stands for a controlled carburetor .
  • 2 or 0.2 shows a carburetor with two throttle valves .
  • 4 or 0.4 shows a double carburetor .
  • TR shows a version with a reduced compression ratio .
  • K means "without catalyst ".
  • Z means "with catalyst".

The TUD engine was only used in the following eleven models below, seven of which were not from the PSA Group:

  • Peugeot : 106 .
  • Citroën : AX and Saxo .
  • Nissan : Micra .
  • Maruti Suzuki : Zen D and Esteem D.
  • IKCO : Samand .
  • Proton : Tiara .
  • Rover : 114D and Mini Metro 100.
  • Lada : Samara .

PSA Peugeot Citroën XU engine

The PSA XU are a series of internal combustion engines used in Peugeot and Citroën and some Fiat automobiles. The engine is still in use today (2017) in the Iran and Egypt-made Peugeot 405 .

The XU engines were introduced in 1981 with the Peugeot 305 . This was a SOHC - or DOHC - line engine with two or four valves per cylinder , with gasoline as fuel . It was tilted transversely by 30 ° only in vehicles with front wheel driveinstalled. The displacement was between 1580 and 1998 cc (gasoline), and all XU gasoline engines had holes of 83 mm or 86 mm. The diesel versions are called XUD and range from 1769 to 2138 cm3 for holes of 80, 83, 85 or 86 mm.The XU series has been replaced by more modern EW / DW series motors .

XU5

The XU5 has a displacement of 1.6 l (1580 cm 3 ) with a bore of 83 mm and a stroke of 73 mm. All XU5 had one overhead camshaft and two valves per cylinder. Depending on the model, either a single or double carburetor or port injection was used. The power ranged from 80 to 115 hp (59-85 kW).
