The Mercedes-Benz W 28 with the sales name Mercedes-Benz 170 H  was a further development of the Mercedes-Benz - rear-engine car type 130 with components of type 170 V . It was made from 1936 to 1939.

The car was presented in February 1936 together with its sister model, type 170 V, and the larger diesel model 260 D at the International Motorcycle and Motor Show (IAMA) in Berlin. The cars were more luxurious than the sister model with front engine and RM  4350,  and 15% more expensive. 1939, the rear engined cars were due to the war and due to low demand without any successors.

The Mercedes-Benz 170 H was equipped with a side - mounted four cylinder in-line engine , installed longitudinally in the rear. The engine with 1697 cc displacement provided 38 hp (28 kW) at 3400 rpm and thus corresponded to that of the front engine model 170 V. Like its predecessor, the four-speed gearbox with overdrive was installed in front of the rear axle. Rear was a pendulum axle with coil springs installed. The front wheels hung axleless on two transverse leaf springs ( independent suspension ). This corresponded to the design of the predecessor model.

The cars were available as a sedan or as a convertible . All bodies had two suicide type doors (hinged behind) . The trunk of the 170 H front of the vehicle was significantly smaller than the rear in sister model 170 V.
