The AEC S-type Omnibus was built in the 1920s in the United Kingdom by AEC with various body types.
History
The AEC 401 model chassis, produced for London General Omnibus Co, as its S type bus, first made its appearance in December 1920. It has a wheelbase of 14ft 1in and was designed to carry double deck open top bodywork type with seating for 54 passengers, room for 28 on the open upper deck and 26 on the lower deck. Fitted with solid tyres it is powered by an AEC 4-cylinder 5.1 litre petrol engine of 35hp rating, and has a multiple clutch and 3-speed gearbox.
In 1924 the S type appeared carrying single-deck bodywork the chassis being the same as that used for double-deckers. All these single-deckers were later converted to pneumatic tyres, as indeed were a small number of double-deckers.
The 401-404 series finally ceased to be produced in 1925 by which time a total of 1,066 had been built with last chassis types used up untill 1927.
