The name Chevrolet Chevette carry two models of the US company General Motors: On the one hand, built from 1975 to 1987 subcompact car; secondly, the lower middle-class model also produced by GM in Brazil, which was produced from 1973 to 1993. Both vehicles were based on the Opel Kadett C.
The Chevette was based on the GM T-platform and was thus front-engine, rear-drive subcompact related to the Opel Kadett C, the British Vauxhall Chevette, the Isuzu Gemini in Japan and the Brazilian Chevrolet Chevette. However, the US Chevette was adapted to the local conditions (especially with regard to the installation of an (extra charge) air conditioning), so that this model appeared later.
The Chevette was also sold in the early years as Pontiac Acadian in Canada, before Pontiac brought the T1000 its own Chevette variant, which was then also offered as Pontiac Acadian in Canada.
History
1970s
For the 1976 model year appears in the fall of 1975, the Chevrolet Chevette, for now only as a three-door station wagon. In addition to the basic model, there is a slimmed-down entry-level model called Scooter, which dispenses with chrome trim and rear seat bank, but with $ 2899 is the cheapest car in the US market; Furthermore, the equipment lines Sport, Rallye and Woody (with side wood foil decor) with enriched equipment. The drive is provided by four-cylinder engines with 1400 cc (39 kW) and 1600 cc (45 kW), coupled with a four-speed gearbox (three-speed automatic on request).
Distinguishing feature of the early Chevette (up to and including model year 1978) are the recessed headlamps in caves, the split grille and the stern in the area under the rear window strongly rounded.
For 1977. The Woody equipment is eliminated, sports and rally packages are replaced by the equipment Rallye Sport. With the scooter, the rear seat is now standard, but can be omitted (for a reduced price). New is the Sandpiper package in white or the special colour golden yellow with decorative stripes on the C-pillars. By changes to the carburettor, the 1.6-liter now comes to 47, the 1.4-liter to 43 kW. Nine new colours are in the program. by 1978 In addition to the three-door, a five-door appears on a 76mm extended wheelbase. The apparently too weak 1.4-liter (especially in conjunction with automatic and / or air conditioning) falls out of the program, the 1.6-liter continues to 46 kW series, a 50-kW version is available at extra cost. The basic equipment of the regular Chevette (not the scooter) is extended by 18 former extras (radio, centre console, front spoiler, etc.), and of the 14 available paint colours are ten new. In 79 The Chevette receives a facelift with rectangular headlights and wide, continuous grille, the rear remains unchanged for the time being. The 1.6-liter receives a double carburettor and now makes 52 and 55 kW. Upon request, a sports suspension with rear and front reinforced anti-roll bar is available under the abbreviation F41.
1980s
In this model year, the rear is lifted and edged, the rear window as well as the rear lights increased. The 14 paint colours are complemented by 5 two-colour combinations. The fuel filler flap is now round (previously angular). The windshield is now glued flush; new are also the silver steel wheels and the black grille with chrome highlights. For the first time there is the power steering in conjunction with automatic and air conditioning. The engine receives a computer control and continues to produce 52 kW, the stronger version does not exist anymore. By 1982 For about 20% surcharge comes from Isuzu derived 1.8-liter four-cylinder diesel (38 kW) in the program (standard consumption: 5.9 l / 100 km in the city, 4.3 l overland). On request, there is the petrol engine with five-speed gearbox, the diesel series. The gasoline engine drops in performance to 49 kW. For the first time, the scooter is also five-door.
1983 The Chevette receives another small facelift with lowered front spoiler, bumpers in body colour (scooter: black bumpers) and a number of black anodized chrome parts. New model Chevette S in a sporty look with even more black. 1984 The scooter is out of the program. Basic Chevette now with black bumpers, on request with chrome inserts. A new trim level is the Chevette CS with bumpers in body colour, centre console, cigarette lighter and radio.1985 The basic model is omitted, only the CS remains available. Diesel no longer in conjunction with automatic. Eight new colours, on request Z13 with grille, bumpers and rims in black. 1986 New Chevrolet emblem adorns the grille on the rear window sits the recently mandatory third brake light.
1987
Elimination of the diesel engine. End of production in the summer of 1987.
