The Volkswagen Routan is a MPV model of the brand Volkswagen . It has only been manufactured since spring 2008 for the North American market at the Chrysler plant in Windsor , Canada . Chrysler is credited with having invented the Microbus car in 1984, but VW marketed the legendary Microbus long before, which became the camper van.The Microbus was followed by the Vanagon and the Eurovan, withdrawn from the market in 2003, but these products never appealed to soccer moms the way Chrysler did. using several panels from the Dodge Grand Caravan and the Chrysler & Country, although the stylists have tried to add their Germanic touch here and there. But can recognize the headlights, grille, and taillights specific to the German brand. The interior also incorporates several components from the American duo. But with red and blue lighting of the gauges, a characteristic of the brand. The Routan's middle bench seat doesn't perform any magic tricks like the Chrysler, but you have to admit that VW has gone all out to make it more comfortable. And it can be completely removed if needed. The third bench seat folds flat into the floor to increase cargo space. The Routan, good for seven passengers, is offered in four versions.
The Routan was derived by badge engineering from the fifth generation of the Chrysler Voyager introduced in spring 2008 . This was larger than the VW Sharan , but was offered in the US from 27,000 US dollars. The Routan's underpinnings are also those of its American cousins. The Canadian market uses only the 4-liter V6 with 251 horsepower, while American market access to the 3.8-liter V6 with 197 horsepower.Regardless of the V6, it's paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift mode. It's still a good thing to end up with the largest engine because, although it provides better acceleration, it's more fuel-efficient thanks to its modern design. ABS and stability control are standard.
In the early years, a 3.8-liter V6 gasoline engine with 145 kW (197 hp) served as the base engine. For an extra charge, there was a 4.0-liter engine, the 189 (253 hp) kW. From the end of 2010, there was only one engine: a 3.6-liter V6 with 208 kW (283 hp).
Criticisms on the Routan were. the poor material quality in the interior and a consumption of more than 12 liters per 100 km in the American standard cycle . But not only qualitatively, also commercially was the Routan for Volkswagen a bitter failure. An annual production of 45,000 to 50,000 pieces was planned, in fact, in the five years from 2008 to 2013, only 57,683 pieces were produced, ie not even a quarter of the planned production.
During the year 2013 the production ended.
