The VW EA288 is a diesel engine series of the Volkswagen AG with three and four cylinders. The engine generation with common-rail injection has been used in various vehicles of the Volkswagen Group since 2012 and is the successor to the VW EA189 series .

Construction

The engines are designed as in- line engines . The engine block of the three-cylinder is made of aluminum alloy AlSi9Cu3, whereas the engine block of the four-cylinder made of cast iron (GJL-250) consists.  The variant with 2.0 liter engine capacity there to compensate the free second-order mass forces with balance shafts .

Like its predecessors, the engines are designed with four valves per cylinder. The two overhead camshafts ( DOHC valve control ) are driven by a timing belt designed for the life of the engine.

The engine has a water cooling . It is divided into several circuits to speed up the warm-up. In the case of the so-called microcircuit , which is driven by an electric coolant pump , the coolant flows through the cylinder head , the exhaust gas recirculation cooler (EGR) and the heating heat exchanger. Only with increasing cooling demand, the mechanical coolant pump is activated and the coolant flows through the engine block. When the operating temperature is reached, the thermostat opens and the coolant flows through the water cooler, where it is cooled down. There is also an independent low-temperature circuit for indirect intercooling, which is also operated by an electric pump.

All engines have an oxidation catalyst and a diesel particulate filter . For engine versions with the Euro 6 emission standard, either a NOx storage catalytic converter or an SCR system is used , depending on the vehicle model .

VW exhaust scandal

In the wake of the revelations about the VW exhaust scandal , a VW manager and a person familiar with the US investigation told the news agency Reuters that there are a total of four engine types affected by the software manipulation, including the series EA288.

After Volkswagen AG had denied nor on 15 October 2015 it had been tampered with EA189 engines other than the series,  was a company spokesman on 22 October 2015 that in the United States, the series is affected EA288.  As early as September 18, 2015, listed the California Air Resources Board in his letter to VW addition, the model 2015, the EA288 series (there as referred Gen3), which with a manipulated control software with cut-off device was fitted. The engines of the Euro-5- (1 September 2015) and Euro-6 version ones would not contain any illegal shutdown.
