In March 1968, the production of the first Hilux began, with elements of since 1967 sold as Toyota Briska compact pick-ups and the larger Toyota Stout short wheelbase infused. The model was developed by the Japanese truck manufacturer Hino Jidosha . Initially, a 1.5 -Liter gasoline engine was available, which was upgraded in February 1971 to a 1.6-l. For the market in North America , 1.9-liter engines were installed, from 1972 with 2.0 litres. From April 1969 was optionally available a long version with 2.30 m long cargo area, which was not offered in North America. A 4-speed manual transmission was standard.

Up front spring independent front suspension. At the rear, progressive action leaf springs cradle loads against road shocks. Fingertip column shift.
Light. positive steering. safe, secure braking with axial-finned drums. Plenty of night with four headlamps.
