The second generation of the Avalon increased in size. It was still based on an extended platform of the Camry and had a 3.0-liter V6 with 157 kW and 298 Nm of torque. The size was still comparable to the Camry.

History

The engine It's a 3-liter V6 with infinitely variable valve timing, the same one found in the Lexus ES 300 and the Toyota Sienna minivan. Silky smooth, well insulated from the chassis. Acceleration is competitive without risking riveting occupants to their seats, the power-to-weight ratio being quite high. It is well supported by the 4-speed automatic transmission, also very smooth, and fuel consumption is reasonable for a vehicle of this size. The 3.0L double overhead cam (DOHC); V6 cylinder engine with 24 valves; variable valve timing; 210 @ 5800 rpm; 220 @ 4400 rpm; and runs on regular unleaded fuel;

The touring-style suspension favours plush comfort at the expense of handling thanks to its Tractions control and its Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system, which curbs the engine's power and selectively applies the brakes when necessary. In short, it has everything needed to please the driver looking for a safe and trouble-free ride.

Moreover, the lightness of the steering doesn't threaten to sharpen your "driving instinct." Just like the front-wheel drive, the braking system is well-equipped with various assistance features: a distribution system that ensures parity between the front and rear axles, electronic assistance that maintains optimal pressure in case of emergency braking, and ABS.

Up front, the well-padded, heated bucket seats provide appreciable lumbar support, but little lateral support. They have power adjustments, enhanced on the driver's seat by a "memory" function, which is also found for the left exterior mirror. The high driving position ensures excellent visibility, except when reversing, due to the high trunk lid. In the rear, the generous headroom easily accommodates three occupants. The centre armrest houses a storage space and two cup holders. Behind it, there is an opening through which long objects, such as skis, can be slid. The trunk is spacious (though less so than the Camry's), storage spaces are plentiful, and the finish and soundproofing are top-notch, although you occasionally hear wind and road noise.
