The Škoda 706 R was a truck of the Czechoslovakian commercial vehicle manufacturer Škoda from the late 40s to late 50s .

History

The Škoda 706 R was a further development of the Škoda 706 lorry  from the years 1939-1945 and was produced from 1947 to 1958. From 1957 This was replaced by the  Škoda 706 RT  , which was manufactured before the Second World War in the main factory of Škoda in Pilsen . Following the destruction of the Pilsen factory, production at the Avia plant began again in 1947 . From 1951 the production was handed over in the newly founded works of LIAZ in the main plant Liberec . Through design improvements to the chassis, it was possible to increase the payload to 9,000 kg.

The production was otherwise based on the pre-war variant. The term indicates this with the addition "R", which meant reconstructed and included the following embodiments:Flatbed truck with 7,300 kg or 9,000 kg payload,Three-way tipper with 6,500 kg or 8,000 kg payload,Coachand the designation Škoda 706 RO (on the frame of the bus and large-volume furniture vans were made) Garbage truck and the name Škoda 706 ROK

In addition to these basic versions, some special versions such as mobile ambulances, X-ray stations , sales cars, etc. were made to supply rural areas. A total of 28,400 trucks and buses were manufactured by the built until 1958 vehicles. The vehicles were after World War II, the only heavy duty transport cars in the civilian area. In use, the vehicles were nicknamed Barci . The use of trucks was primarily on large construction sites. A large part of the flatbed and dump trucks were also imported from 1951 to 1956 by the GDR .

The specified technical data refer to the flatbed truck. Compared to the pre-war Škoda 706 model , the tried-and-tested design has been further strengthened so that payloads of up to 9,000 kg have been achieved. The robust, after the vortex chamber method working diesel engine was revised compared to the pre-war model. The gearbox had a typical at that time unsynchronized 5-speed gearbox with a reverse gear on the rear wheel axle executed, it had a differential .

The cab was a mixed construction. It consisted of a hardwood base frame planked with sheet metal. Inside, next to the bed for the three-headed crew under the seat, the starter battery and the fuel tank were housed in an extra wooden frame. The seat was two-piece covered with synthetic leather. The steering was designed for a heavy vehicle without power steering. But the steering wheel was so big that some drivers could see through it.

The loading area and the side walls were made of wood with the flatbed truck. On the three-way tipper, the cargo bed was an all-steel construction that could be lifted hydraulically. The drive for the hydraulic system was realized by a countershaft of the gearbox and activated by the driver by a lever next to the steering wheel. In the models of the truck, the bodies were painted in dark green color, the frame and the wheels in black.

The oil consumption of the engine was specified at 0.8 liters per 100 kilometers, the maximum gradeability was 32% (with a trailer and 5 t weight 20%), the turning radius of the truck was specified at 21 m.
