The Renault 18 is a mid-size car manufactured by the French manufacturer Renault from 1978 .

History

The Renault 18 was produced in France at the Renault factory in Flins near Mantes in the department of Yvelines .Its design was created by stylist Gaston Juchet .

Based on its predecessor the Renault 12 , the 18 takes over the chain-driven side camshaft longitudinal engine and the rigid rear axle. The Renault 18, which retains classic bumpers, is more rounded and looks larger. Its relative lightness despite a good width and its aerodynamic profile allow it a good top speed. On the other hand, the suspension improved significantly when a new generalized setting for 1983 said negative offset launched on the Renault 20 decreased the crushing of the front suspension when braking, associated with the new laws of depreciation and stiffening of joints of the rear axle.

The Renault 18 was designed rather quickly, the time between its initial design and its actual launch was only eighteen months. Although the Renault 12 was manufactured in many countries, the 18 was the first Renault really planned to be easily mounted on other continents. Moreover, the advertising slogan will be "Renault 18: an international requirement". Outside France, the car continued to be produced in Argentina , Australia , Colombia , Ivory Coast , Mexico , Morocco , Spain , Uruguay and Venezuela .

In the early 1980s, the Renault 18 is the best-selling family car in France. After the launches of the Renault 9 and the Peugeot 305 Series 2, its end of career will be more difficult. In 1986, the Renault 18 is replaced by the 21 . However, because of the continued export of 2-liter petrol models, production will stop only in 1989 in France.

The Fuego coupe is closely linked to the Renault 18, which includes the platform and the 1.4-liter, 1.6-liter, 2-liter and 2.1-liter diesel engines.

Changes

  • April 1979: launch of the break and the basic model.
  • July 1980: diesel versions. The Douvrin engine  of 2 068  cm 3 67 hp comes from the Renault 20 diesel.
  • September 1980: appearance of the 18 Turbo (185 km / h) with engine 1,565  cm 3 developing 110 ch DIN at 5,000 rpm, the low boosting power of 0.6 bar boosts the maximum torque of 11.3 mkg at 3,000 rpm at 18.5 mkg at 2,250 rpm. The pressure will be slightly increased for 1983 to reach 125 hp. The negative offset front axle is standard. The 18 Turbo stands out thanks to the Fuego- type dashboard , the Fuego GTX 2-liter low-profile tires , the front spoiler, the black bumpers, the black mid-feet, the side stripping, the chopsticks. wide type side protection and rear spoiler.
  • January 1984: launch of the turbo diesel engine. The Diesel Douvrin  engine of 2,068  cm 3 88 hp will also be mounted on the Jeep Cherokee .
