The Porsche 718 Cayman Type 982 is an after extensive facelift of the type 981 built mid-engine - sports cars of Porsche AG.

History

The sports car was presented to the public at the Beijing Motor Show in April 2016. Porsche calls it the third generation. It has the same technical platform as the Porsche 718 Boxster (Type 982) introduced at the beginning of 2016 .Porsche then brought the Boxster and Cayman together under the 718 series. While the Cayman as a separate series at 987 and 981 was priced above the Boxster, is now the convertible version 718 Boxster - with the exception of Cayman GT4 compared to the Boxster Spyder - the more expensive version. As with the predecessor model, the 718 Cayman and the 718 Boxster are again available as GTS versions. It was launched in October 2017 and was launched in mid-December 2017.

As with the 911 Carrera 991.2 series, Porsche introduces a T-model for the Cayman. This is based on the base Cayman and continues to produce 220 kW (300 hp). In contrast to the 718 Cayman, the PASM sports suspension with lowering (minus 2 cm), the Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) incl. Mechanical rear axle transverse lock and the Sport Chrono package are standard on the 718 Cayman T. Standard is a 6-speed manual transmission, optionally also a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (PDK) is available.

As with the previous model, the GT4 variant represents the most powerful version of the series. It was presented on 18 June 2019 and is powered by a six-cylinder boxer engine with 309 kW (420 hp). The cheaper Boxster Spyder uses the same powertrain.

Instead of a six-cylinder boxer engine without supercharging as in the predecessor Cayman Type 981c , the 718 Cayman is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder boxer . This has again Porsche four-cylinder boxer engine and making it next to Subaru currently the only manufacturer of such engine type.
