The Pontiac Grand Safari was built by the US automaker Pontiac from 1970 to 1978 large estate of full-size car class.
History
From the 1971 model year, the luxury versions of the large Pontiac station wagons that had previously been called Safari were called Grand Safari.
The Grand Safari station wagons were in the model years 1971/72 and 1975 to 1978 officially the Bonneville series, 1973/74 they were part of the Grand Ville series. The combination models of the base series Catalina were still called safari. In 1977, the big Pontiac models became considerably smaller; this also affected the station wagons, which lost about 40 cm in length and almost 500 kg in weight. While the tailgate in the older versions along the base of the rear window was split horizontally, the new models had a rear door, which both (with electrically retracted rear window) fold down as well as could be opened to the side.
There were consistently two models on offer, a six-seater and a nine-seater with third row of seats in the luggage compartment. They were powered by V8 engines initially 7.5 litres, later also 6.6 and, from 1977, 5.7 litres.
From the model year 1979 was renamed the Grand Safari, instead, the combination version of the Bonneville was called Bonneville Safari again.
In eight years, 98,700 units were built by the Grand Safari.
