Pontiac Grand Am was the name of several models produced by the US automaker Pontiac between 1972 and 2004. The first two generations of models were sporty versions of the then mid-range Le Mans . In contrast, the vehicles offered from 1985 to 2004 belonged to the (by American standards) lower middle class as a successor to the model Phoenix .
The first Grand Am (the name leaned on other names used at that time at Pontiac such as Grand Prix and Trans Am ) appeared in the fall of 1972. It was a sporty made version of the Pontiac mid-range Le Mans model . A special feature of the Grand Am was the front end of flexible polyurethane plastic. Available was the Grand Am as a two-door coupe and a four-door sedan,
The drive took over as standard a 6.6-liter V8 engine (172 hp / 126 kW), on request was a 233 hp (171 kW) quadruple carburetor version of this machine and a 7.5-liter V8 (253 hp / 186 kW) to choose from. The Super Duty high-performance variant of the big V8 (314 hp / 231 kW) was indeed in the supplement list, but did not arrive in the case of the Grand Am for delivery. In 1974 minor changes were made to the body and engines. In the 1975 model year, the engine range from the 6.6-liter (now with 172 or 188 hp / 126 or 138 kW) and the 7.5-liter (now 203 hp / 149 kW performing) together. At the end of the model year, the Grand Am was taken out of production.
