Nissan MA10S and MA10ET Engines
The Nissan MA10S was the first engine in the MA engine range. It served as the basis for all subsequent versions of the engine. engine range was re developed for the Nissan Micra K10, which was launched in 1982 in Japan and ran until 1992 Various details from the engine series A and E of the former larger vehicles were adopted. The engine was designed exclusively in 2-valve technology. The engine Four cylinder in-line water-cooled petrol with block and cylinder head are made entirely of aluminum, resulting in a very low weight of only 70 kg (including intake and exhaust manifold and alternator).
The MA10ET came around 1985 with presentation of the March Turbo on the Japanese market. It's a turbocharged and ECCS-enhanced MA10S.
The following MA engines were built by Nissan:
- MA09ERT
- MA10ET
- MA10E
- MA10S
- MA12S
The engines were built in the following, all based on the K10 platform Nissan models:
- Nissan Micra ( HK10 )
- Nissan Micra Turbo (EK10FR)
- Nissan Micra Super Turbo
- Nissan Pao ( PK10 )
- Nissan Figaro ( FK10 )
- Nissan Be-1 ( BK10 )
In the Nissan S-Cargo , also on K10 basis, the E15S engine was installed. The Nissan MA10E was also sold.
The breakdown of the engine code:
- MA = motor series MA
- 09/10/12 = [cubic capacity in cm³] / 100
- S = carburetor
- E = multipoint injection (also known as Nissan ECCS)
- R = Roots compressor
- T = turbocharger
Nissan MA10S
Mixture preparation
- For versions without KAT, a downdraft carburetor with electronic shut-off valve to prevent overrun
- for versions with KAT, a downdraft carburettor with mixture control valve and shut-off valve
- This carburetor version is also called single-point injection, it being noted that the mixture control valve does not inject fuel, but adds additional air, thereby achieving a rudimentary mixture regulation.
Performance data
- Power without AGR / KAT: 40KW / 55PS at 6,000 / min
- Torque without EGR / KAT: 76 Nm at 3,600 / min
- Power with AGR / CAT: 37KW / 50PS at 6,000 / min.
- Torque with EGR / KAT: 72 Nm at 3,600 / min.
Motor data
- Bore: 68 mm
- Stroke: 68 mm
- Bore-to-stroke ratio: 1.0
- Compaction 9.5: 1 or 10.3: 1
- 2 valves per cylinder (mounted at an angle, not vertical)
- Inlet valve: 35 mm diameter
- Exhaust valve: 30 mm diameter
- central camshaft driven by toothed belt (very similar to Opel CIH )
- hemispheric combustion chamber
- Hemispherical piston crown (different compression heights)
- Cross-flow cylinder head
- Centrally located spark plug
Materials
- All-aluminum engine block
- All-aluminum cylinder head
- dry cylinder liners made of steel
Crankshaft
- 5-way mounted crankshaft
- Main bearing diameter 45 mm
- Main bearing width 17.1 mm
- Connecting rod diameter 40 mm
- Connecting rod bearing width 15.1 mm
- Crankshaft with holes through the connecting rods for weight reduction
Lubrication system
- Oil content: 2.8 liters (viscosity 10W-40, 15W-40, 20W-50, depending on the application)
- Oil pump in the oil sump, driven by a shaft-gear combination of the camshaft
Cooling system
- Coolant content 4 liters
- Cooling system with expansion tank
Ignition without CAT or U-CAT
- Vacuum-controlled distributor, driven by camshaft
- Ignition order: 1-3-4-2
- Timing: 2 ° after TDC at 750 / min to 850 / min (for manual transmission)
- Spark plug: NGK BPR4ES, NGK BPR5ES, NGK BPR6ES (depending on application)
Ignition with CAT
- electronically adjusted transistor ignition, driven by camshaft
- Ignition order: 1-3-4-2
- Ignition timing: 10 ° before TDC at 750 / min to 850 / min (for manual transmission)
- Spark plug: NGK BPR4ES-11, NGK BPR5ES-11, NGK BPR6ES-11 (depending on the application)
Motor control
- Control unit without KAT: for shut-off valve
- Control unit with KAT: for shut-off valve, ignition setting and mixture regulation
- Built-in CPU is a Motorola 68000 series processor . The EPROM is not socketed!
Worth Knowing
- To set the ignition on a MA10S without KAT, the hose of the vacuum adjustment unit must be disconnected from the distributor. Hence the very moderate value of 2 ° after TDC.

Worth Knowing
- The MA10ET was produced in two versions. There was the version A-1 and A-2, the latter was installed in the Figaro FK10. The MA10ET A-1 was first in the Nissan March Turbo in 1985.
