After the production cessation of the Mercury Villager in 2002, Nissan developed a stand-alone van, which came on the market in 2004. The third generation of the Quest is based on the FF-L platform, which was also used by the then Altima and Maxima. The quest was produced at the newly opened Nissan plant in Canton, Mississippi.

With its long 124.0-inch wheelbase, 77.6-inch width and 67.3-inch front and rear track, the new Quest offers one of the largest interior volumes of any front-wheel drive minivan.  Overall interior volume of 211.9 cubic feet, as well as ample cargo space behind the 2nd row seat and 3rd row seat are significantly improved over the previous generation Quest.  Special attention was also paid to front seat dimensions, with first row shoulder room among the best in class. Quest’s sliding door openings measure 33.8 inches, over four inches longer than the nearest competitor (2003 models) and over six inches longer than the previous generation Quest.  The wide doors combine with a 2nd row seat “tip up” feature to address one of consumers most frequent complaints regarding current minivan designs – getting in and out of the 3rd row. Another innovation that seeks to address owner dissatisfaction with current minivan designs is the Quest's new flat-folding seats.  Quest advances the folding seat concept by applying this feature to both the 2nd and 3rd row seats, with the 3rd row folding flat.

The Quest interior features include 2nd and 3rd row folding seats, A standard 150-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with eight speakers is offered, along with an available first-ever for the U.S. Bose audio system for the minivan in the segment – a 265-watt 10-speaker audio system.  a 10-speaker Bose audio system (the first ever Bose system developed for a minivan in the U.S.), a DVD Entertainment System and a dramatic new Skyview roof glass panel system that creates a bright and airy feeling throughout the cabin.

The interior concept is characterized by the rear seat, which results in a flat cargo bed when folded up. The middle two seats can be folded almost flat. Optional or standard equipment details include a glass roof, two flat screens on the vehicle roof, side airbags front, head airbags for all rows of seats, ESP, traction control, electrically operated sliding doors and tailgate, Bose audio system, two-zone air conditioning and parking assistance. In 2007, a light facelift was made with visual changes on the front and in the interior.

  • Available Skyview roof glass panel system for 2nd and 3rd row seats

Powering the front-wheel drive Quest is a 240-horsepower 3.5-liter DOHC V6, while a new 4-wheel independent suspension provides excellent dynamic capabilities.  The Quest utilizes Nissan's proven FF-L platform, also found on the Altima, all-new 2003 Murano crossover SUV and the all-new flagship 2004 Maxima premium performance sedan.

Engine and Driveline

  • FF-L (Front engine, Front-wheel drive, Large) platform
  • 5-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 engine producing 240 horsepower and 242 lb-ft of torque
  • Aluminium block and heads, sequential multi-point electronic fuel injection, Continuous Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS), micro finished crankshaft and camshaft, molybdenum-coated pistons

The engine is also used in many other models V6 engine VQ35DE with 3.5 litres displacement. In the Quest this makes 179 kW (243 hp) and the maximum torque is 328 Nm.

In 2010, the quest was not offered because according to Nissan, production capacity was needed at the Canton plant for the production of the Nissan NV delivery van.

Built in 2004 models of the Quest suffered from many quality problems. Most had been fixed by the end of the year by an engineering team specially sent from Japan. Already sold vehicles were repaired in the context of recalls by the dealers. Also affected by the quality issues in the first year of operation of the new plant were the Nissan Titan and the Infiniti QX, which ran there at that time also from the band.

  • Zone Body construction with front and rear crushable zones and occupant zone
