History

The Laurel 4th generation debuted in Europe as a low-cost six-cylinder automobile to mixed reviews. The new body, which had three side windows and a bevelled front end, resembled the Opel Senator. The 1.8-liter four-cylinder remained the base engine, followed by a two-liter four-cylinder, a two-liter six-cylinder (also available as a turbo), a 2.4-liter inline six-cylinder, and diesel engines with displacements of 2.0 and 2.8 litres. The coupe was dropped from the lineup, leaving only four-door sedans with or without B-pillars. The Laurel was available with six-cylinder gasoline engines (2 or 2.4 litres, 71 to 83 kW / 96 to 113 horsepower) or a 2.8-liter diesel engine (60 kw / 82 hp) starting in May 1981.

In the fall of 1983 accounted for the two-liter, the performance of the 2.4-liter was raised to 88 kW / 120 hp, at the same time was renamed Nissan Laurel. In combination with the 2.4-liter gasoline engine and the 2.8-liter diesel mandatory higher-quality features including power windows on all four doors, central locking, power steering, headlight washer and high quality velor seat cushions supplied. For a surcharge there was, also for the diesel, a three-stage (from 1983: 4-speed) automatic transmission and an electric steel sunroof and Metalliclackierung. Alloy wheels and air conditioning could be retrofitted on request from the dealer with original parts from Japan, where it already had this equipment from the factory.

The performance and fuel consumption of the C31 were at about 172 km / h and 12.5 l / 100 km of regular gasoline in the 2.4-liter 6-cylinder gasoline engine with 5-speed manual transmission (3-speed automatic: 165 km / h). h, 13.5 l / 100 km, 4-speed automatic: 165 km / h, at about 12.8 l / 100 km). The 2.8-liter diesel with 5-speed manual transmission reached 160 km / h at approximately 9.0 l / 100 km diesel fuel (3-speed automatic: 155 km / h at about 9.5 l / 100 km, with the later available 4-speed automatic transmission: 155 km / h at about 9.2 l / 100 km) The 4-speed automatic transmission brought a significant reduction in noise at lower fuel consumption in both gasoline and diesel Engine speeds with it, which improved the comfort noticeably. The top version of the Laurel made 114 kW / 155 hp.
