Mercedes-Benz M113 V8 engine

Mercedes-Benz / AMG
Mercedes-Benz V8 engine
Manufacturer: Mercedes-Benz / AMG
Production period: 1997-2012
Style: V , eight-cylinder
Engines: 4.3 liters (4266 cc)
to 5.5 liters (5439 cc)
Previous model: M 119
Successor: M 273 , M 156 , M 152
Similar models: M 112 , M 137

The M 113 is an eight-cylinder - V engine ( gasoline engine ) from Mercedes-Benz , which in September 1997 in the E-Class (210 series) was introduced, and later in the S-Class 220 series and other models. This replaced the built in 1989 M 119 from. In September 2005, the successor M 273 was used. In some models, however, the M 113 was also installed after the generational change (2005/06).

Technical

The M 113 was offered both with mechanical supercharging (compressor) and without. He is technically closely related to the V6 M 112 . Both engines have the same angle of 90 ° between the cylinder banks, and uniform cylinder spacings of 106 mm. As a result, they can be produced efficiently on the same production facilities and use many identical components. Both have an engine block made of light alloy with cast-in cylinder liners made of Silitec ( Al - Si - alloy ), and a light alloy cylinder head having an overhead camshaftper cylinder bank. The camshafts, and with the M 112 also the balancer shaft , are driven by a double roller chain.

For each cylinder , the M 112 and M 113 engines have two intake valves and one exhaust valve, which are operated via light metal roller rocker arms with hydraulic valve clearance compensation. By the single exhaust valve results in a smaller surface of the exhaust passage and thereby, in particular when the engine is cold, a lower heat emission of the exhaust gas to the cylinder head. The catalyst thus reaches its operating temperature faster. The thin-walled sheet metal exhaust manifold , which absorbs only little heat, also contributes to this.

For each combustion chamber, the engine has two spark plugs on the right and left of the exhaust valve. The arrangement of valves and candles is symmetrical. The double ignition operates with time-shifted control of the two candles. This results in a fast and uniform combustion, greater safety against combustion misfires and higher tolerance against Gemischabmagerung and exhaust gas recirculation . Because of the double ignition, the heat load of the pistonrises, this is cooled by oil spray nozzles, which inject the engine oil from below against the piston crown. The candles in each combustion chamber are also controlled from one stroke to the next in alternating order. This results in a more uniform and lower heat load on the piston and even burning of both candles.

The 5-liter variant of the M 113 is optionally available with cylinder deactivation (ZAS). At low load and up to a speed of 3500 rpm, the engine runs with only four cylinders. Two cylinders of each bank are shut down so that the remaining cylinders ignite at regular intervals (180 ° crank angle). The valves are also shut down. The rocker arms are divided into two, and the parts can be decoupled from each other by a hydraulically actuated piston. The ZAS improves the efficiency of the engine through smaller throttle losses and higher effective compression as the cylinders are filled better. According to the manufacturer, the fuel consumption of the S 500 (220 series) is reduced by 0.9 l / 100 km by the ZAS.

Based on the E 55 ML variant, the Mercedes-Benz M 155 was developed for the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren .
