History

The Hippo Truck was used in the 1930s as a commercial vehicle in Britian.Later a military version that was still based on the late 1920s pre-war truck model whose military version was only produced in 1944. The strength of the Hippo was off-road capability with a high payload of up to ten tonnes. The engine was placed under the cab, creating a flat, large cargo hold at the rear. This today common arrangement of the engine was unusual at that time.

The Leyland Hippo was a body was a steel framed military truck with ten tons payload and two rear drive axles (6 × 4 propulsion formula ), the Leyland Motors produced for the British Army as  six-cylinder inline diesel engine with 100 bhp, through a auxiliary gearbox low high gearbox.

The first version Mk I had an open cab that could be closed with a tarp. The Mk II version comes with a fully enclosed steel cab, along with a variety of military uses, such as a darkroom for photo development. The Leyland Hippo was partially used by the British Army until the 1970s with over 1,000 built. The name was still later used in the 1960s for the Freightline commercial vehicle .
