The Holden HD series is a range of cars and Commercial vehicles which were produced by Holden in Australia from 1965 to 1966.

History

Introduced in February 1965, the Holden HD had a completely new body, which was wider and longer than that of the EH but did not look so different from its predecessor but Body styling exhibited more of the GM Opel Vauxhall range. Finally, this really had room for six seats. The wheelbase had increased by 1 " with coupe utility and panel van body styles following later of that year. The engines of the predecessor were taken over; for the larger there was a high-performance version X2 with 140 bhp (103 kW).

The Holden HD range offered the normal 4 door sedan and 5 door station wagon body styles in three trim levels with the six models. The HR Standard and HR Special got square chrome frame for the headlights and other bumpers and taillights compared to its predecessor. The HD commercial vehicle range came as a 2-door coupe utility and 2 door panel van.The distribution of weight was 49.8% to the front axle, and  50.2% at rear axle.

The most noticeable change, however, were the new engines, all bigger and stronger than their predecessors. Three versions of the inline six-cylinder Holden Red motor were available. From 2.45 l-V6, a motor with 2,638 cc and 108 hp (79 kW) at compression 8.2: 1, or 114 hp (84 kW) at compression 9.2: 1.

PERFORMANCE 2.4L

  • Engine Capacity 149 cu in, 2,441.66 cu cm
  • Fuel Consumption 28.5 m/imp gal, 23.8 m/US gal, 9.9 1 x 100 km
  • Max Speed 87.5 mph, 140.9 km/h
  • max power (SAE): 100 hp at 4,400 rpm
  • max torque (SAE): 145 1b ft, 20 kg m at 2,200 rpm
  • max engine rpm: 5,300
  • specific power: 41 hp/l
  • acceleration: standing 1/4 mile 21 sec,
  • Automatic gearbox 0—50 mph (0—80 km/h) 12.7 sec

The 2, 9 l-V6 was an aggregate with 3,048 cc replaced displacement, that with a compression of likewise 9.2: 1, a power of 126 hp (93 kW) (S model) or the 145 hp (107 kW) "X2" version of the "179" was also available as an option on all models. For the export market A 194 cu in (3.2 L) Chevrolet six was fitted in the South African market.

Holden HD car history (1965-1966)

On request, there was in addition to the standard 3-speed gearbox, a manual 4-speed gearbox from GM Disc brakes were offered for the first time on a Holden model and the Hydramatic three–speed automatic transmission was replaced by a Powerglide two speed unit or the 2-stage GM Powerglide-Automatic with 2 ratios (1st 1.820, 2nd 1, rev 1.820), . The Holden HD was also offered with a factory performance engine the known as the"X2" this came with external "X2" badges. The "X2" featured twin carburettors, a high-lift camshaft, new inlet and exhaust manifolds and a low-restricted exhaust system. It also included a special instrument cluster.

Optional Accessories a 3.360 axle ratio; front disc brakes; servo brake; power-assisted steering; Powerglide automatic gearbox, hydraulic torque convertor and planetary gears with 2 ratios(1 1.820, Il 1, rev 1.820).

The HD produced 178,927 in total. When the popular HR was replaced in January 1968 by the new models Belmont as successor to the standard and Kingswood (as successor to the Special), all figures including Premier models.
