The Alpina B7 Turbo was one of Alpina produced small series -car with turbocharger based on the model E12 of the 5-Series BMW .The BMW B 7 Turbo, the fastest standard 4-door touring saloon in the world at the time. Technology in brief: 6 cylinders, 3,000 cc ,300 hp, top speed over 250 km / h,acceleration from 0 - 100 km / h in 6 seconds, price when new DM 61.120

History

The B7 Turbo was first built in December 1978. It was the first complete vehicle that Alpina produced and was produced in small series. The B7 engine was based on the BMW M30 B30. Profound changes have been made to it. Fritz Indra , chief developer of Alpina, used a type K27 exhaust gas turbocharger from Kühnle, Kopp & Kausch (KKK), which enabled the high output of 221 kW (300 PS ) at the time. The torque was 463 Newton metersat 2500 revolutions per minute. KKK manufactured the turbine according to Indra's specifications. It worked with a variable boost pressure of 0.6 to 0.9 bar. With the valve open to the minimum, the unit developed 184 kW (250 hp), a value that the naturally aspirated engine also achieved - but only at a speed of 1000 revolutions per minute higher. At full boost pressure, the output could be increased to 221 kW (300 PS). At the end of the 1970s, the Alpina B7 Turbo was the fastest series-produced sedan in the world.

The compression of the engine has been reduced. In addition, special pistons and a special resonance suction pipe were used based on the principle of the Hungarian designer Cser. The combined charging system for gasoline engines was achieved by connecting the resonance intake manifold to the turbocharger. In addition, the Zenith DL injection from Karl-Otto Noelle, which Pierburg manufactured, the Hartig ignition , a charge air cooler (air / air cooler) from Längerer & Reich and a Gillet twin-pipe exhaust system all contributed to the success. Alpina developed the first series six-cylinder BMW turbo engine for the Alpina B7 Turbo .

The transmission and the rear axle have also been optimized on the drive train. This included the rear axle cooling, which was ingenious from the point of view of the time. The oil is set in motion by a mechanical oil pump using a belt drive on the right drive shaft and can thus circulate in the housing and oil cooler. In addition, an HA temperature display was installed in the cockpit to keep the driver informed about the upcoming temperatures, because 140 ° C should not be exceeded. The rear axle was also available with a 25% lock as an option.

BMW-Alpina-B7-Turbo-1979 history

The car had a specially developed chassis with light alloy wheels in the style of the house as well as tires of sizes 205/55 at the front and 225/50 at the rear, which were still considered wide in the 1970s. Leather steering wheel, wooden gear knob, footrest, the alpina decor (outside) in gold or silver and a silver-plated production number badge in the interior were part of the standard equipment of the model. Furthermore, the vehicles were equipped with an additional tank as standard, which increased the tank capacity to 109 liters.

149 Alpina B7 Turbo vehicles were built in just over three years. 1981-82 60 copies with 330 hp were built, called Alpina B7 S Turbo .

Alpina B7 Turbo Coupé

Alpina B7 also built the 153 times based on the model E24 of the 6-series BMW , then as Alpina B7 Turbo coupe. In 1982, 30 units with 330 hp were built, known as the Alpina B7 S Turbo Coupé .
Dimensions: length × width × height 4755 × 1725 × 1345 mm, wheelbase 2626 mm, weight 1550 kg.
