The Peugeot 204 is a French car that was produced in Sochaux France between 1965 and 1976.

History

The 204 was the brand's first front-wheel drive , the 204 was also the best-selling car in France in 1969 , 1970 and 1971 .was made in several variants: saloon , station wagon (starting from the 1966 models), coupe 2 + 2 seats (from October 1966 to March 1970), convertible  (from October 1966 to March 1970) and van version ( from the 1967 models).

In the early 1960s, Peugeot, which has only large sedans in its range, decided to reposition itself in the mid-size sedan market and to follow up on the successful Peugeot 201 , 202 series. and 203 . Previously known as Project D12 , the Peugeot 204 is presented for the first time on the April 23, 1965 .

The 204 was updated regularly: new wheels for the 1966 models, rear cut-off type with new lights for 1967, dashboard with round dials for 1968, bumper with rubber protection bead for 1969, new padded steering wheel for 1969 and 1975, new heraldic lion on the grille for 1972, bumper type 104 and rear lights widened for 1973, front turn signals white for 1974, black plastic grille for 1975 and hubcaps type 104 cut on the latest sedans. For 1977, the new 104 with 6 hp engine succeeds the 204.In the French Army , the 204 Black Luxe with Simplified Equipment was used as a liaison vehicle and as a driving school (with a transverse white band on the bonnet) before being replaced by the 304 GL sedan .

  • September 1967 Saloon GL & Estate Car facia now includes 3 round dials as on F.H.
  • September 1967 Coupe now with instrument nacelle black (instead of chrome),Saloon GL Coupé have padded steering wheel recessed door handles
  • March 1970 F.H. Coupé 204C production discontinued
  • july 1970 with alternator replacing dynamo. GL Recessed interior door handles. Fully padded armrests
  • September 1972 Larger rear light units on Saloon only, Illuminated heater control cigar lighter
  • September 1974 Black plastic grille. 304 style steering wheel without ribbed paddng
  • August 1975 1127 cc engine. replaces the 1130 cc.
  • August 1976 Discontinued

Peugeot 204 car history

Five variants of the 204 were offered:

  • four-door notchback sedan (June 1965 to July 1976)
  • five-door station wagon ("Break", January 1967 to July 1976)
  • three-door coupe (January 1967 to March 1970)
  • two-door convertible (January 1967 to March 1970)
  • three-door small delivery van ("Fourgonnette", October 1966 to June 1976)

The 204 combines technical characteristics uncommon at the time.

This is the first Peugeot front-wheel-drive sedan - after the Peugeot D3 then D4 vans from 1950, inherited from Chenard and Walcker built since 1941. The engine is in transverse position , as are the 1931 DKW F1 , the Mini Austin and Morris from 1959 and the 1964 Autobianchi Primula. Entirely made of light alloy , the latter has an overhead camshaft and exists in petrol versions, of 1,130  cc and 53  hp (then 55), and Diesel , of 1,255 cc and 40 ch , which will later be replaced by a 1 357  cc of 45  hp . This diesel engine, based on the undersized gasoline block for this adaptation, was at the beginning of important development problems: problems of cylinder head, cracking of engine block and many engine breaks causing many standard engine exchanges in the Peugeot network.

At the time, the 204 Diesel had the smallest diesel engine in the world mounted on a production car.The motor being positioned transversely and the fan positioned longitudinally, it had the particularity to be driven by a belt with referrals to reach the pulley of the crankshaft. The gearbox , under the cylinder block , is enclosed with the differential in a common housing , like the Mini Austin and Morris, released in 1959. The lubrication of the assembly is thus ensured with the same oil as the engine. The 204 was also the first Peugeot model to be equipped with front disc brakes and four independent wheels distribution of weight for saloon is 58.5% to front axle, 41.5% rear axle .

PERFORMANCE:1130cc

  • Engine Capacity 68.95 cu in, 1,130 cu cm

  • power-weight ratio: 31.1 lb/hp, 14.1 kg/hp
  • acceleration: standing 1/4 mile 20.7 sec, 0—50 mph (0—80 kmh) 14.6 sec

The general technical architecture of the 204 will be taken directly by the 304 , the 104 , then the 305 .
