The Peugeot 202 is a car of the Peugeot brand produced between 1938 and 1949 .

History

In 1934, to meet the launch of the Citroën Traction Avant , the Sochaux constructor launches the Peugeot 402 which will be the first model of the complete renewal of the Peugeot range. The 202 was immediately recognizable as a Peugeot, the way the headlights were, as on the old 302, close together, housed behind the grille. The 202 whose two headlights are close behind the grille as on the 302 and 402 is a competitor of the Renault Juvaquatre and the Simca 8 .. Eager to offer a model more accessible to its customers, and to counter the success of the Renault Juvaquatre but especially the Simca 8 , Peugeot paufine a model similar to the 402, but on a reduced scale, which will appear in the spring of 1938 under the name of 202 .

It is a sedan with 4 seats accessible by 4 doors, including front opening in the direction of travel, as usual at that time. It resumes the 402 line, with its twin headlights inside the grille, rear wheels keeled and trunk "beaver tail". His style is more compact and looks better proportioned than the 402 .Elegant and quite carefully presented, it quickly seduces its faithful French clientele with its flexible suspension. Despite a lack of power, the small engine of 1 133  cm 2 developing only 30  hp , it is economical and robust.Sales will reach nearly 20,000 in the course of 1938, prompting the manufacturer to quickly offer a convertible version and a 6-sided long-sided limousine limousine.

In 1939 the French army requisitioned 400 Peugeot 202, for lack of sidecar . The 202 will be used in the GRDI as command, liaison or even antiaircraft cars with the addition of an FM 24/29 on the roof, but also in the air force as connecting cars . The 202 will simply be painted olive green , even camouflaged and will be added the tactical signs.

Between 1942 and 1945 , production was interrupted because of the war. It will resume in 1946 with the B series recognizable by its rims full steel  without hubcaps. In 1947, Peugeot finally equipped it with hydraulic braking, ensuring acceptable stopping distances.

Small modifications and improvements continued to be introduced until the end of production.

  • In March 1938, steel perforated sail rims were replaced by Michelin "Pilot" wheels, the tires were then 145 × 400 correcting a bit the very vagueness of the basic car. The tracks are widened by a few millimeters.
  • December 1938: abandonment of the torsion bars in favor of an ancient transverse blade with triangles and assembly of the TG2 engine on rubber blocks in place of silentblocs.
  • Resumption of production at the beginning of 1945 of the pre-war version.
  • In May 1946 202 becomes 202 B, with new box and bridge ratios. In an attempt to improve handling, the front and rear tracks are further widened by 20  mm .
  • Shortly after, the dashboard is redesigned and incorporates a very small glove box.
  • In 1948 , the wheels are embellished with chrome caps and plated hubs
  • Finally, the car received hydraulic dampers (which turned out to be of the design of the 203 ).

Its manufacture ends at the beginning of the summer 1949 , it is replaced by the 203 of 1948.
