By the late summer of 1995 until the end of 1999, the Taurus was now built in a completely new design. However, this series was not as successful as its predecessors, because many buyers felt their style as too radical. The shape was very round and flat, especially the oval shaped rear windows were controversial.
In September 1995 launched the new Taurus, again as a four-door sedan and five-door station wagon in the equipment variants GL and LX, as a sports sedan SHO. The manufacturer has done everything to ensure that the new series stands out clearly from its rivals. The Taurus, moreover, earned the best rating for its interior and exterior design. The big boss, Alex Trotman, declared that the new Taurus had to shock some people Others, however, didn't appreciate this "overly futuristic look," while the interior is interesting.
The GL had a 108 kW (147 hp) three-liter V6, the LX a 149 kW (203 hp) carrying three-liter V6 with two overhead camshafts and the SHO a 3.4-liter V8 with 179 kW (243 hp) , The SHO was offered only with four-speed automatic. The G range models were only available with steering column shifter,The LXwith a center console and the floor-mounted shifter.
In spring 1997, the G supplemented the Taurus range as a starter model. The SHO received new five-spoke alloy wheels and a rear spoiler in body color.
In early 1998, the model program was rearranged; The LX was now available as a sedan, the extensively equipped SE as a sedan and station wagon and the SHO as a sports sedan. LX and SE had the 108 kW three-liter standard, but both could also be ordered with the 149-kW variant. Grille and front bumper were given a facelift.
From the beginning of 1999, the 149 kW V6 was no longer available for the LX.
The third generation Taurus could no longer defend the top spot that its predecessor had in US sales statistics. However, in four years Ford was able to sell about 1.4 million units despite everything.
