In 1991, the Crown Victoria (the term "LTD" was omitted) for the model year 1992 presented. This is built on a box frame. In order to be able to guarantee short service lives after collisions or major repairs, this has been designed in such a way that the complete front end including the motor and axle can be exchanged in a short time. Accordingly, the fenders are bolted instead of welded. The trunk volume is, due to the design, limited by the rear axle and fuel tank. Safety is provided by the standard electronic locking of the ignition after a collision. If the vehicle then proves to be ready to drive, the system can be deactivated by a corresponding switch in the trunk.
History
The Ford Crown Victoria is a car model of the US automaker Ford, which was offered from early 1992 to summer 2011 in the North American market in the so-called full-size category. In contrast to its main competitor, the Chevrolet Impala, which was mainly sold in North America, the Crown Victoria was also offered in various markets such as the Middle East.
Crown Victoria is a traditional Ford model designation whose origins go back to the 1950s. Since 1996, Crown Victoria vehicles have also been available in the Middle East.
In Canada, the model was from 2000 only available as a fleet and police vehicle and for private individuals only second hand. Also in the US, the Crown Victoria has not been sold to private individuals since the end of 2007.
From 1982 to 1991 (officially called LTD Crown Victoria), it was the continuation of the 1978 Ford LTD; Since 1980, the LTD flagship Crown, the name was then extended to the entire model range to distinguish them from the new, smaller LTD, a sedan based on the Ford Fairmont.
After General Motors had ceased production of its full-size models Chevrolet Caprice , Buick Roadmaster and others in 1996 due to declining sales and increased demand for vans and trucks (pickups and SUVs) in the US, remained the so-called Crown Vic and the parallel model Mercury Grand Marquis as the last US full-size models after classic American model (rear wheel drive, rigid axle rear, place for 6 persons), which were not sold under premium brands ( Cadillac , Lincoln ). This was also reflected in the then relatively cheap base price of 25,445 US dollars (March 2007).
Only one engine variant was available. Originally it produced 202 hp (150.6 kW), with an optional dual exhaust system 212 hp (158.1 kW). Corresponding to its main purpose of use, the Crown Victoria was designed as a true six-seater and therefore equipped with a bench in front (with upscale models in two parts, electrically adjustable and with fold-down centre armrest). This resulted in the operation of the standard three-speed automatic transmission by means of steering wheel circuit. The car's functional technology includes features like An integrated front-end with halogern headlights speed sensitive steering, four wheel disc brakes, a rear stabilizer bar, a standard driver's side air bag and options like rear air suspension and antilock brakes with traction control.
The Crown Victoria was much more aerodynamic designed than its predecessor LTD with optical borrowings from the popular Ford Taurus. So, he got a similar roof with four side windows and instead of a grille a narrow air inlet between the hood and bumper. The body design was not well received. Although most of the production went to fleet customers (police, fire brigade and other authorities, but especially taxi companies), the vehicle was also available for a long time to private customers. There were different versions. The top version was in the first model year the name Touring Sedan, then LX, it included the standard 212 hp engine, wider tires on aluminium rims, air suspension for the rear axle, leather upholstery, windscreen heating, colour-contrasting plastic parts, Ford's exclusive access system with number code for the driver's door and many more comfort features. Instead of the air conditioning was also a climate control available. At first, there was only an airbag on the driver's side.
In 1993, followed by a light facelift, which was reacted to the criticism of the design. It included a narrow plastic grille between the headlights, emphasizing the then-current design line of the Ford models.
In 1995, the satin-chrome-plated trim strip below the trunk lid was supplemented by a red reflector strip on the lower edge. The tail light units were sized larger and led on both sides with gentle momentum to the recess for the license plate, the inner part was only reflected, but not illuminated.
