The Ferrari 250 Monza was a racing sports car that was developed in 1954 at Ferrari.

History

The 250 Monza is in contradiction to the developments of the Scuderia Ferrari in sports car racing in 1954. There, with the use of the 500 Mondial and the 750 Monza just took place the conversion of the drive to 4-cylinder in- line engines . Why Ferrari built this model for racing use, is largely unclear.

The Ferrari 250 Monza was not an independent and completely redesigned racing car model. In essence, this vehicle was an assembly consisting of the chassis of the 750 Monza and the 250MM taken over by Aurelio Lampredi further developed Colombo -3-liter V12 engine , which has now made 240 hp. The model was born from the coupling of the chassis of the 750 Monza with the engine of the 250 MM. The latter was a V12 at 60º, and was designed by Gioachino Colombo.

The car was characterized by having the gearbox mounted in the rear axle , which provided a more balanced weight distribution. At the “250 Monza” rear suspensions were also installed including a De Dion bridge, which improved road holding.

Four examples were made with bodywork barchetta whose line was designed by Dino Ferrari. Two were built by Pininfarina, and were inspired by the 500 Mondial. The other pair was instead created by Scaglietti, and their design was reminiscent of that of the 750 Monza. The four chassis, 0420M, 0442M, 0432M and 0466M received at the beginning of Spyder bodies Pininfarina . After the chassis 0442M was severely damaged in an accident in 1957, Scaglietti built a new body.

The model made its competition debut under the Ferrari banner on 6 June 1954 at the 12 Hours of Hyères. Later one of them came fifth in the 1954 Giro dell'Umbria. This example was the only one not to be sold to private customers and it did not achieve any other important victories; the other three were sold and won several Italian races, including the Maurice Trintignant and Luigi Piotti

Technical specifications

The engine was a non-supercharged 60º V12 fitted  front and longitudinal. The bore and stroke were 73 respectively to 2953.21 maximum delivered power by the engine was 240 while the compression ratio was 9:1, . The light alloy engine was manufactured in Monoblock with the head.

The distribution was formed by a single overhead camshaft which controlled two valves per cylinder with by three carburettors  and wet sump lubrication magnets related system was single ignition and model 36 IF/4C.Weber brand

The front suspensions were independent, and had transverse wishbones installed and a leaf spring mounted in the same way; the rear ones were instead made up of a De Dion bridge, double struts and a longitudinal leaf spring. Both were equipped with hydraulic shock absorbers. The brakes were drum brakes on the four wheels, while the steering had a worm screw fine and toothed sector. The traction was to the rear, and the transmission a manual gearbox four speeds plus reverse.

The frame was tubular in steel. The bodywork was a two-seater spider spider, and was the work of Scaglietti and Pininfarina. The maximum speed reached by the “250 Monza” was 250 km/h.
