The Toyota 3S-GE is a gasoline engine for automobiles built from the mid 1980s to the mid 2000s in which the cylinder head was developed by Yamaha Motor based on the S-type (second generation) engine manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation,In total over the long production run there are five generations of the 3S-GE The first-generation 3S-The fourth-generation 3S-GE, also known as the 'Red Top BEAMS' 3S-GEGE built in the 1980s .Also as the turbo specification 3S-GTE .
History
Based on the 2S-E engine , which was an in- line 4-cylinder SOHC 8-valve engine fitted with forged crankshaft and five aluminium alloy bearings , a alloy cylinder head made by Yamaha Motors, and the inner diameter and stroke of the cylinder were changed to make it of a more sporty specifercation with higher BHP output. .It was used for the first time in the 1980s second-generation Camry V10 series , which underwent minor changes in June 1984 , and also the first-generation Vista (V10 series) . At first, it was designated as regular gasoline type engine, but later changed to high-octane gasoline designation due to the increase in output with aluminium alloy pistons, designed to withstand high temperatures.
From the 1980s to the middle of the 2000s, it was widely installed in Toyota's sports grade mid-sized vehicles , A derivative version of the 3S-GE is the 3S-FE equipped with Toyota's in-house high-mecha twin-cam head . This is a practical engine designated for regular gasoline, and was widely installed in Toyota's medium-sized vehicles. The early 3S-GE has a weak spot for the vacuum sensor, and there have been several service campaigns. Regarding the corresponding drive system, there was a time when four types could be selected for commercial vehicles.

The second generation was only produced from 1990 to 1993 and the third generation from 1994 to 1999. In 1994, the 3S-GTE adopted a 4-2-1 exhaust manifold and a twin-entry turbocharger that prevented exhaust interference. The turbocharger is still in the CT26 format, but the inside of the compressor housing is thermal sprayed to bring the tip clearance as close to zero as possible also the 3S-GTE cylinder head was improved. This now has improved the cooling performance around the valve system.
The fourth-generation came in late 1997 known as the 'Red Top BEAMS. The 3S-GE adopted a variable valve timing mechanism ( such as VVT-i ), which greatly improved output and fuel efficiency , giving it the well known nickname Beams short for Breakthrough Engine with Advanced Mechanism System.Again a tear later in 1998, a variable valve timing mechanism ( VVT-i ) was added to the exhaust side ( Dual VVT-i ), This again increasing the power output to 210 horsepower.
The later fifth-generation was used only in the JDM market. Later by 2007 the final Production has been completed , it was only a naturally aspirated model, but in the latter half of the 1980s, a turbo model 3S-GTE also appeared and was installed in the Celica GT-FOUR and other models.
Due to its thick strong cast iron cylinder block , it has been used as a tuning base engine for a long time. However, the disadvantage is that it is therefore heavy engine approximately 160 kg compared to full alloy type engines.
