The Chrysler Newport Fourth generation was built and marketed from 1965 to 1968.
History
The 1965 Newport was built on an all-new Chrysler C platform, while wheelbases increased 2 in (51 mm) to 124 in (3,150 mm) (wagons continued on the 122 in (3,099 mm) wheelbase). with sales rising about 55 percent over those of the previous 1964 year. The 1965 Newport’s featured a sculptured side panel with stainless steel trim All body styles were continued from 1964 including the pillared four-door sedan, four-door hardtop sedan, two-door hardtop coupe, and convertible and station wagon. The dual headlamps and horizontally outlined taillights above the rear bumper were now on the outer edges of the fender line. The grille a fine, horizontal bar with a rectangular medallion in the centre. The new chassis used a two inch longer wheelbase than previous Newport’s. A new, larger displacement engine was now featured as was a six-window sedan.
A new Serial Number format was introduced. The Delaware built cars used Serial Numbers C156-01 and up. Station wagons from C556-01 Detroit built cars used Serial Numbers with C153-01 and up. Station wagons used numbers from C553-01
The engine prefix was 'A' for 1965 models. The standard engine was the 383 cu in (6.3 L) V8 with Carter Type BBD two-
barrel Model 3849S carburettor and 270 hp (201 kW) at 4400 R.P.M. With Cast iron block. Displacement: 383 cubic inches. Bore and
stroke: 4.25 x 3.375 inches and compression ratio: 9.2:1. with Five main bearings and Hydraulic valve lifters. Option was the 383 with four-barrel carburetion and 315 hp (235 kW).
The standard transmission was a three-speed column shifted manual and optionally available was the three-speed Torque flite automatic transmission, now featuring a column-mounted shifter replacing the pushbuttons of previous years as was changeover on all 1965 model year Chrysler Corporation cars and trucks.
Interiors featured padded instrument panels, full carpeting and choices of cloth-and-vinyl or all-vinyl bench seats and notchback bench seats with armrest. Newport coupes and convertibles were also offered with optional bucket seats with either a centre console and floor shifter or armrest and centre cushion.
The 1966 Newport received minimal changes. to the grille and rear deck but was otherwise changed very little from 1965. Nameplates were placed on the rear quarter panels. A Cleaner Air Package was available for emission control shoulder harness safety option. Newport’s built in Detroit used Serial Numbers from CL23G63-01 Delaware built cars used Numbers from CL23G66-01 and up.
Engine were revised with the 270 hp (201 kW) 383 cu in (6.3 L) two-barrel with Bore and stroke of 4.25 x 3.375 inches and Compression: 9.2:1 continuing as standard equipment while the four-barrel 383 received a 10 hp (7 kW) increase to 325 hp (242 kW). Also, Chrysler’s 440 cu in (7.2 L) V8 a high-output TNT version with four-barrel carburettor, dual exhausts and 365 hp (272 kW).
The 1967 Newport received new sheet metal, but retained the basic 1965 bodyshell. Only three body styles were offered in this series. Now had an upgraded Custom trim with Upgraded upholstery options and a change in body mouldings minor facelift to the grille, rear deck and side body panels. The two-door hardtop had a redesigned roof The four-door station wagon is called the Town and Country. Standard equipment inside glove box with three-cup tray and secret compartment; cigar lighter; front and rear ash trays; carpeting; front foam cushion with centre folding arm rest. Controls three-speed wipers; electric windshield washers; trip odometer. Also included safety features such as brake warning system.
Engines options included a 325 horsepower 383 cubic inch V-8 and 375 horsepower 440 cubic inch V-8, the 440 cu in (7.2 L) TNT version was increased up to 375 hp (280 kW; 380 PS).
The 1968 Newport received only a minor facelift from 1967 including new grilles and taillights. The 1968 Chrysler Serial Numbers were now located on a plate attached to the left side of the instrument panel and visible through the windshield.
All body styles were carried over on both the base Newport and Newport Custom lines. Radiator grilles a V-shaped, mesh type grille and rear end
were restyled Deluxe has simulated wood-grained exterior body panel in wheel covers: torque flight transmission; time delay ignition light switch; power tailgate window; all-vinyl bench seats with front centre arm rests wood-grained exterior side body panelling for Newport convertibles and two-door hard-tops. Production of the 1968 Sports grain Newport’s was 965 hardtops and 175 convertibles.
