With the introduction of the second generation of the Chevrolet Lumina in the fall of 1994, the former Lumina Coupé was marketed under the revived name Monte Carlo.
The new Monte Carlo was available in two level trims, the LS and the Z34 Offered were an LS called base model with 3.1-liter V6 engine (160 hp / 119 kW) and the sports version under the name Z 34, powered by a DOHC -V6 engine, the 3.4 liter displacement maximum Power of 210 hp (157 kW) scooped. Both engines were serially coupled with a four-speed automatic transmission .
In the 1996 model year, the maximum output of the 3.4-liter engine, which was now also available at an additional cost in the base Monte Carlo, increased to 215 hp (160 kW), the Z 34 received disc brakes on all four wheels. 1997 models now added daytime running lights dual airbags and ABS as standard to the range.
In the 1998 model year, the 3.4-liter engine gave way to a larger 3.8-liter OHV -V6 engine (200 hp / 149 kW).
The first Monte Carlo with front-wheel drive was built by summer 1999 about 350,000 copies.
1999
In autumn 1999 a new Monte Carlo based on the simultaneously introduced new Chevrolet Impala . Thus, the wheelbase extended by about 75 mm (3 "), while the outside length of the vehicle became about 50 mm (2") shorter.
While the factory had provided the forerunner with a smooth-surfaced, unfussy body, the successor in the form of pronounced beading on the fenders cited earlier generations of Monte Carlo. Offered again were a Monte Carlo LS (3.1-liter V6 engine, 180 hp / 134 kW) and a SS (V6 engine, 3.8 liter displacement, 200 hp / 149 kW), from model year 2004 on SS Supercharged with 3.8-liter V6 supercharged engine with 240 hp (179 kW) of maximum power.
In this model year (2004), several special models have been launched: Monte Carlo Intimidator SS (number: 4000) in honor of Dale Earnhardt Sr., Dale Earnhardt Jr.Signature Series Supercharged SS (number: 2883). In the model years before, it was the Dale Earnhardt Signature Edition (model year 2002, number of pieces: 3333) and the Jeff Gordon Signature Edition (model year 2003, number of pieces: 2424); in the following model year 2005 the Tony Stewart Signature Series (number: 1020).
