The Chevrolet 490 was a car manufactured by Chevrolet between 1916 and 1922 as an entry-level model.

History

The car was significantly cheaper than the other Chevrolet models and was named after its price in the first model year of $490 US. This was available as a one-door roadster or three-door touring car (the driver's door was missing). Like the more expensive Series H this had the 490 a four-cylinder block engine with overhead valves , 2,802 cm 3Displacement and an output of 24 bhp (17.6 kW). The engine power was transmitted via a cone clutch and a three-speed gearbox with manual transmission to the rear wheels. The rear wheels were equipped with outer band brakes.

In 1917, the two models got front left doors and there was also an "all-weather tourer" in which the fabric roof was replaced by a hardtop . The windshields were now tilted 15 ° backwards. In the following year there was also a sedan with three doors (again missing the driver's door). 1919 accounted for the all-weather tour and there was also a two-door coupe.

In the model year 1920, the biggest change took place on the 490: The cars were given curved lines in the area of the bulkhead in the fashionable torpedo style and the engine power increased to 26 bhp (19 kW). 1921 the car was also available as a chassis without body, 1922 in addition as a two-door delivery van. In this last year of production, the selling price for the most expensive model, the four-door sedan, after all, already 875, - US $.

In six years, 627,619 copies of the 490. In 1923, the model was replaced by the Superior .
