The Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in hybrid -car the compact class of car giant General Motors . Identical models are the Opel Ampera (first generation) and the Buick Velite 5 ( second generation).

History

At the Detroit Auto Show 2007, a concept vehicle  was first shown under the same name , with which the GM E-Flex platform first presented. This attempted to standardize components of electric cars to enable interchangeable power generation systems. Even in the original design of the Chevrolet Volt was an electric motor with a 16-kWh lithium-ion battery system combined; a small combustion engine that drives a 53 kW generator. Since the electric drive is independent of the concept of the load, there were several different options for the internal combustion engine. As an alternative one planned engines that could be operated with ethanol , a diesel engine that was compatible with biodiesel and a hydrogen fuel cell. A Chevrolet Volt as a fuel cell vehicle was shown in 2007 at the Shanghai Auto Show. Formally presented for the first time in September 2008 on the centenary of GM (centennial celebration), publicly it was shown the following month for the first time at the Mondial de l'Automobile 2008.

Chevrolet Volt 1st gen Technical details (2010-2015)

The first ready-to-drive prototype vehicles with the body of the production vehicle were completed in June 2009.The production of battery packs for the production version began on 7 January 2010 at the GM plant in Brownstown Township in the State of Michigan, which the pre-production vehicles at GM's Detroit-Hamtramck end of March 2010. Some announced later the US government under President Barack Obama to buy the first 100 vehicles. As of November 2010, production of salable vehicles were taken. The first production car was reserved for the GM Heritage Center.

The production model was offered at the end of July 2010 in the United States. After three weeks after a successful crash test on May 12, 2011, a Chevrolet Volt burned in the US and the battery system was revised at the end of 2011This delayed the start of production of the identical Opel Ampera .The last Chevrolet Volt of the first generation was built in May 2015. The vehicle is 4498 mm long, 1787 mm wide, 1430 mm high and has a wheelbase of 2685 mm. The unladen mass is 1715 kg.It is based on GM's Delta II platform. The body has five doors and ends with a hatchback .

Chevrolet Volt 1st gen specifications (2010-2015)

Voltec drive of the production model

By the Voltec drive , which is fed by on-board batteries, the car is moved by an electric motor with 111 kW peak power. The electrical range of about 60 km should be sufficient to cope with the usual distance traveled by American commuters (about 53 km). The vehicle has a top speed of 160 km / h. The sprint from 0 to 100 km / h takes 8.5 seconds. The generator is driven by a non-turbocharged 1.4 liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine with a 63 kW (86 hp) maximum power, which only starts up when the batteries are almost flat. and the range increased by about 500 km.

GM does not call this hybrid vehicle , but electric vehicle with range extension. Normally the accumulator is charged at night. The electrical connection is protected at the front left next to the driver's door with a gas cap like the fuel tank. A charge takes about 10-12 hours in North America (120 volts, 15 amps) and about 4 hours on a 240v connection.  For trips that exceed the range of the vehicle in battery mode, the power is supplied by the on-board generator; Excess electricity (eg braking energy) charges the batteries.

Electricity consumption was determined by the US Environmental Protection Agency EPA at 22.4 kWh / 100 km. This equates to the gasoline equivalent of 93 miles per gallon ( mpg ) or 2.53 l / 100 km with full battery on the first 35 miles (56.3 km). The Volt consumes gasoline only when the batteries are discharged. Therefore, consumption data are dependent on whether the car is electrically, mixed or - with discharged battery with the combustion engine and the detour of power generation is moved. In the latter case, the gas mileage is 37 mpg or 6.36 l / 100 km and 60 mpg, corresponding to 3.92 l / 100 km of gasoline equivalent in combined operation.
