VW 1.2-liter TDI and 1.4-liter TDI

The 1.2-liter TDI engine and the 1.4-liter TDI engine are similarly constructed. Main difference is the material of the cylinder block. In the 1.4-liter TDI engine, this is made of gray cast iron in the 1.2-liter TDI engine, it is made of die-cast aluminum with 3 cast-in cast-iron cylinder liners.

 Both engines are water cooled supercharged turbocharged engines. The piston hubs and the connecting rods of the engines are trapezoidal in design. The six valves of the motors are actuated by a toothed belt driven overhead camshaft. The cylinder head houses the unit injector, which is actuated by an additional cam on the camshaft via a roller rocker arm. The injection pressure is up to 2050 bar. To compensate for unwanted inertial forces of the engines, the engines have a balancer shaft, which runs opposite to the crankshaft. It is driven from the crankshaft via a chain, which also drives the oil pump. A hydraulic chain tensioner ensures a tensioned chain. On the cylinder head, the vacuum pump of the engines is driven, which is driven by the camshaft. The oil filter housing of the engines with paper filter is upright, the engine coolant pump is integrated in the cylinder block. The exhaust manifold of the 1.2-liter TDI engine is for weight reasons of sheet steel, a part of the exhaust gas is recirculated into the combustion chamber, before it is cooled by a heat exchanger. 

For engine charging, a VTG turbocharger is used. Engine control is provided by the "Bosch EDC 15P" engine control unit, which can run the 1.2-liter TDI engine in "Sport" and "Eco" modes. The "Eco" mode reduces torque and power output. The engine control unit also controls the idling speed of the engine, during the rolling of the equipped with a 1.2-liter TDI engine vehicle with more than 13 km / h to 770 rpm is reduced at a low speed, the idling speed is 850 rpm .In the 1.4-liter TDI engine is only an operation program for the application that operates without power reduction. The 1,2-TDI engine with 45 kW (61 hp) was exclusively in the Audi A2 and Lupo installed 3L. The 1.4 TDI engine with 55 kW (75 hp) was used in the Lupo, Polo (6N2) , Polo 9N, Seat Ibiza, Škoda Fabia and Audi A2, the later engines with 70 and 80 hp in the Polo 9N3, Škoda Fabia, Seat Ibiza, VW Fox.
