The EA827 (EA = development order) is an engine series of the Volkswagen Group with four cylinders in series and liquid cooling .

The EA827 in 1972 for the Audi 80 developed  and fitted in 1973 the Audi 80 B1 and VW Passat B1  here we look at sizes from 1.3 to 1.5 liters  and of 60 to 85 hp.The first four-cylinder diesel engines of the Volkswagen Group is also based on the EA827 engine block. The EA827 is a water cooled four - cylinder inline engine with gray cast iron engine block and aluminum cylinder head .

 The overhead camshaftis toothed belt driven and operates the parallel hanging valves via bucket tappets . The oil sump of wet sump lubrication and the distributor of ignitionsit at the ends of an inclined shaft, which is driven by helical gears of a so-called intermediate shaft. The intermediate shaft in turn is driven at half the crankshaft speed via the toothed belt. Originally, the engines of the series were equipped with carburetors, later they were converted to intake manifold injection.
