The 2.5-liter TDI engine is a turbocharged, five-cylinder, water-cooled cylinder engine manufactured from aluminum alloy using low pressure die casting. The cylinder liners are plasma-coated. The engine has a cross-flow two-valve cylinder head with integrated unit injector unit. This is actuated by an additional cam on the spur gear-driven overhead camshaft. The forged and cracked connecting rods are connected to the pistons via a trapezoidal connecting rod eye and a trapezoidal piston pin boss. The six-bearing crankshaft is equipped with an integrated vibration damper. The gear drive driven from there is executed by eleven 15 ° helical gears mounted on the flywheel side of the engine. In each case a gear drive the camshaft, the coolant pump, the alternator, the oil pump and the power steering including the air conditioning compressor. The oil filter is housed in a standing oil filter housing and has a paper insert. The oil cooler is integrated in the oil filter housing. The exhaust manifold of the engine is made of cast iron, the exhaust gas is passed through a VTG turbocharger and partially returned to the combustion chamber. The engine is controlled by the engine control unit J623, the diesel control is taken over by the Bosch EDC 16 control unit.
