Rover 100 Series |
The City Rover was a small car from Rover , which was introduced in the fall of 2003. It was a slightly modified Tata Indica with Rover logo (so-called badge engineering ) production ran only for 2 years.
The model should be offered as a successor to the in England at first quite successful small car Rover 100 . The car, based on the Austin Mini Metro or Rover Metro , was taken off the market in 1998 after catastrophic results in the Euro NCAP crash test. BMW also wanted to avert further image damage from Rover. Since no successor had been developed for the original model, the sales figures for Rover continued to decline. After the withdrawal of BMW was searched under financially difficult conditions for a cheap way to fill the gap in the model range. Tata offered as a partner, as the company had developed a small car in India, which had to be modified only marginally for distribution through Rover.
The vehicle, which was initially sold only in England and Spain, sold only slowly. Technically, the City Rover could not meet the demands made in Europe and also not convincing safety. Although this was equipped with two airbags and ABS, but had a too compliant passenger compartment. The design corresponded to the state of the early 1990s. The prices for the vehicle were extremely high despite price reductions compared to more modern competitors.
In May 2005 after the bankruptcy of MG Rover in the English seaport Dover arrived shipload with City Rovers was sold as bankruptcy mass in supermarkets. Allegedly had been planned at MG Rover to bring out the model year 2007, a successor to the City Rover. Also, on a MG version had been thought. The cooperation with MG Rover has been terminated by Tata, also to prevent further exploitation of the City Rover by other cooperation partners. Another production of the City Rover was thus prevented.
